Celebrity Watches
Over the years, Nate D. Sanders has auctioned a wide array of celebrity watches worn by society’s most iconic figures — from celebrity to sports legend.
Indeed, the watch makes the man, so here’s a run-down of some of the most impressive time keepers we’ve seen yet.
In April, Clark Gable’s Own Vintage Rolex Wristwatch sold for an incredible $23,116.
Circa 1940, the 14k watch was acquired from Gable’s personal estate. Check out the above photos of Gable wearing the watch in candid moments.
Frankly, my dear, Gable did give a damn when it came to watches, as this Rolex marked his impeccable debonair taste.
In April, we auctioned Joe DiMaggio’s Rolex watch from his personal collection. It sold for $8,908.
Joltin’ Joe wore the watch later in life as the Oyster Perpetual Datejust was given to him for his 70th birthday in 1984 by the Resorts Casino Hotel company, as the timepiece’s original case is engraved, ”Joe DiMaggio / 70th Birthday / Resorts” to verso.
We auctioned Ed Sullivan’s Tiffany’s wristwatch given to him by Frank Sinatra. It sold for $6,543.60
The watch was a Christmas gift and his a personalized engraving that reads ”Thanks Ed, Frankie [Sinatra], December 25, 1947”.
Getting a gift from Frank Sinatra is up there in life with actually being friends with the man, and Sullivan got both, even though the two had a falling out as described in ”His Way: An Unauthorized Biography” in which Sullivan vowed to send this watch back to Sinatra.
In September, Moe Howard’s 14k gold wristwatch sold for $6,083.
We’ve auctioned a lot of cool Moe Howard & Three Stooges items over the years, but this timepiece by Le Coultre is one of the more personal items, especially as you can see him wearing it in the above photo.
In our incredible Captain Kangaroo auction, we sold this Captain Kangaroo screen-worn Timex watch with original case for $600.
Though it may be smaller than his iconic set of keys, he donned this watch onscreen, perhaps when greeted with the show’s famous salutation, “Good Morning, Captain!”
Lastly, we sold Elvis Presley’s personally owned customized gold watch.
The King loved his gold embellishments and adorned himself in all kinds of glitzy bedazzles over the years. This Mathey Tissot watch was custom-made by Memphis Jeweler Harry Levitch in 1971. It has ”ELVIS PRESLEY” engraved in raised circular letters studded with four small stars around the bezel.
The watch was given by Presley to Alan Fortas in the early 1970s and includes a copy of an LOA from Fortas, as the two became friends in Graceland in the 1950’s and Fortas worked for Presley for most of his career as one of the prominent ”Memphis Mafia.” This sold for $8,000.
Celebrity clocks can be pricey too as in this example:
Tiffany & Co. World Clock From the Lyndon B. & Lady Bird Johnson Estate — Engraved ”The President, November 22, 1963 – January 20, 1969”
This sold for $10,540.80.
Time may go on, but owning a nice watch, especially worn celebrity watches, is eternal.
