Bronko Nagurski Award
A few years back, my auction company, NateDSanders.com Auctions, was called by Bubba Smith to his house in Los Angeles, just south of the 10 freeway in midtown, to authenticate his collection. I met with him twice, did an informal appraisal and met his good friend, Eli. Then, my staff was at a Chicago sports memorabilia show and the news came over the wire that Bubba had passed. Eli later told me that one of Bubba’s female friends, maybe in Michigan, who had been advising him had told him to just get the appraisal but not to sell. Thus, I met him which was a thrill, but I didn’t get anything monetary out of the relationship. So, when Bubba did pass, Eli contacted me, as Bubba left all or most to him, and I was able to sell his estate for Eli. The best piece to come out of Bubba’s collection was his 2007 Bronko Nagurski award, that he proudly displayed in his hallway, directly to the left of his front door. Bubba Smith 2007 Bronko Nagurski Award — First Ever Award Presented to “Best of the Best” Defensive Player
Charles “Bubba” Smith 2007 Bronko Nagurski award. Smith was the first player to receive this award recognizing the “best of the best” defensive football player from the past 40 years. Plaque upon the awrd reads: “2007 Bronko Nagurski Legends Award presented by CSX Intermodal / Bubba Smith – DE / Michigan State University / 1966 Team”. The 19.25″ x 10.5″ bronze and marble statue weighs an impressive 31.5 pounds. Near fine condition. Accompanied by an LOA from the Trustee of the Bubba Smith Estate. Sold for $6,563.
