Bram Stoker Autograph Sold

Bram Stoker is best-remembered for authoring the 1897 Gothic masterpiece Dracula. He worked as the manager of stage actor Sir Henry Irving, whom he idolized, and penned several letters on his behalf daily as well as managed London’s Lyceum Theater. Irving is believed to be the inspiration behind Stoker’s Count Dracula of his novel Dracula.

We at Nate D. Sanders Auctions sold a Bram Stoker autographed copy of Dracula for $4,440. Here are the item details:

Bram Stoker Signed “Dracula” 1910

Bram Stoker signed copy of “Dracula.” London: Constable: 1904. Boldly inscribed to front free endpaper, “F. G. Haley from Bram Stoker 27/1/10.” Francis George Haley served as the Librarian of the “Gladstone Liberal Library.” As a known benefactor of the Liberal party, Stoker likely met Haley on many occasions and signed this volume just two years prior to his own death. Bumping to edges of volume. Slight markings to interior; pencil numbers to rear endpaper. Front inner hinge cracked but holding. Good condition. Sold for $4,440.

Bram Stoker Autograph Letter — Written in His Hand & Signed by Henry Irving, on Whom Stoker Based the Dracula Character

Bram Stoker handwritten letter on Lyceum Theatre stationery, signed by Henry Irving. Stoker, the author of “Dracula,” based the title character on Irving, for whom he worked at the Lyceum. Dated 30 September 1896, it reads in part: “…Dear Mr. Berlyn / Many thanks for the paragraph in the World. It is as you say necessary to remind some people that the history of the Lyceum did not begin with their interest in theatrical affairs…” 2pp. on card-style stationery measures 5″ x 8″. Toning and tape to interior at the top edge. Very good. Sold for $934.

Huxley’s “Brave New World” 1st Edition

Aldous Huxley’s “Brave New World,” London: Chatto & Windus: 1932. First edition, first printing accompanied by first edition dustjacket. One of Huxley’s most popular works, a quintessential novel of ideas and the definitive critique of the technology based ‘rational’ society. Original blue cloth boards, spine lettered and tooled in gold, top edge dyed blue. Spine is darkened from slight sunning but remains tight; interior pages remain clean. Dustjacket shows slight restoration to flap folds and vertical edges. Overall excellent condition. Sold for $2,830.

Ray Bradbury Signed First Edition of ”Fahrenheit 451” — Rare

First edition of ”Fahrenheit 451” signed by author Ray Bradbury. Ballantine Books: New York: 1953. Bradbury’s cult classic novella is considered one of the finest literary works of science fiction, with ink illustrations by Joe Mugnaini. First edition hardback in original price-clipped dustjacket is bound in red cloth boards, measuring 5.5” x 8”. Near fine condition, with small strip of dampstaining to lower edge of front board and previous owner’s name on signature page. Dustjacket is in beautiful, near fine condition with only slight wear. Sold for $2,520.

Ayn Rand Signed ”Atlas Shrugged” — Her Magnum Opus — Number 721 in a Special 10th Anniversary Edition Limited to 2,000

Ayn Rand signed limited edition of ”Atlas Shrugged”, Random House: New York: 1967. Rand’s celebrated final novel set in a dystopian America popularized the philosophy of Objectivism and rational self-interest. Limitation page is signed ”Ayn Rand” in blue ink and indicates this is number 721 of a 10th Anniversary signed edition limited to 2,000 such copies. At 1168pp., this is her lengthiest piece of literature. Bound in blue cloth boards with gilt lettering and top edge blue. Measures 6” x 8.75”. Some minor blue ink to spine and scratching to bottom edge, else near fine. Sold for $2,188.
