Scarce 1922 Autograph Letter Signed by Jazz Legend Leon “Bix” Beiderbecke — “the piano is a wonder and really I’m playing over my head”
Very scarce autograph letter signed by Leon “Bix” Beiderbecke with holograph envelope postmarked 31 May 1922 from the Sheridan Beach Hotel in Michigan City, Indiana. Beiderbecke writes less than two weeks after being expelled from the Lake Forest Academy, and at the nascence of his professional musical career. Letter reads: “Dearest Mother, Well here I am at Mich. City and having a wonderful time – have met some very good people including a pipe organist who plays at the 7th Pres. Church at Chi. I shot her a hot line about you being a K.O. on the organ and played at the 1st Pres. Ch. at Dav. Ia., and she is determined to meet you she’s a peach, studies under C. Eddy Stewart is having a hemorrhage trying to get me to tell me to come out for a couple days and has finally located meI’ll only stay two or three days then return to Chi. and try L. Forest again. And then home. I’m borrowing carfare from Sis. out and of course Sid will pay my fare back – thats why I’m going. He won’t let me pay it. We are going to drive to Sylvan beach & cinch some more jobs for this summer thats the main reason for going. / Well a nice porter just informed me that they had some wonderful chicken for dinner so adios – boy this is life – they are all so wonderful to one here. I play the piano & everyone in the hotel crowds around & sings and complements me – the piano is a wonder and really I’m playing over my head – well address your letters to 830 Avon St. Flint, Mich Sis is well and sends love along with me. / Your erring son / Leon.” Two page letter on separate 6″ x 9.5″ sheets perfect for display. Usual mailing folds and very light toning, otherwise near fine. Letter is referenced in the biography “Bix: The Leon Bix Beiderbecke Story.” Sold for $8,000.
