Arthur Middleton autograph
An Arthur Middleton autograph is one of the rarest autographs of the Declaration of Independence signers, to go along with Button Gwinnett & Thomas Lynch. Twelve years ago, we sold one of the only Arthur Middleton autographs that have been on the market. Here is the description, picture and price realized:
Arthur Middleton Autograph on an Arthur Middleton Autograph Letter
Declaration of Independence signer Arthur Middleton autograph letter with a signature pasted on it, “Middleton.”. Most likely written while Middleton was studying law at the Academy in Middle Temple, shortly before sailing home. The letter reads, “My dear Sir, Yr letter today assuring me of yr. liking my family came very opportunely to give me the confidence of desiring you will let me see you some day the beginning of next week for I would gladly consult your judgment in some thing relating to Jack, by which you will find that tho I can challenge the least share in the cause of yr liking. I have as fine a value for you as (not only they) but anybody else can have; for I am really much yr. humble servant, Middleton.” There is a postscript added and it reads, “Mr. Larsop, you and Jack I think will be both good here, to answer for themselves there faults to you and yr. complaint of… before to tell you.” The letter was allegedly written to the Hon. Mr. Walsh (perhaps a school official) while Middleton was a student in England. The date of the writing puts Middleton at about 20 years-old. Signature was cut out of letter and then re-adhered. Very nice condition. A fine Arthur Middleton signed item. Sold for $21,738.
