Andy Warhol Large Signed Poster of Marilyn Monroe
Andy Warhol (/ˈwɔːrhɒl/; born Andrew Warhola; August 6, 1928 – February 22, 1987) was an American artist, film director, and producer who was a leading figure in the visual art movement known as pop art. His works explore the relationship between artistic expression, advertising, and celebrity culture that flourished by the 1960s, and span a variety of media, including painting, silkscreening, photography, film, and sculpture.
The Marilyn Diptych (1962) is a silkscreen painting by American pop artist Andy Warhol depicting Marilyn Monroe. The monumental work is one of the artist’s most noted of the movie star. The painting consists of 50 images. Each image of the actress is taken from the single publicity photograph from the film Niagara (1953). The underlying publicity photograph that Warhol used as a basis for his many paintings and prints of Marilyn, and the Marilyn Diptych, was owned and distributed by her movie studio. Marilyn Diptych was completed just weeks after Marilyn Monroe’s death in August 1962.
Andy Warhol signed poster from his acclaimed show at the Tate Gallery in London in 1971, depicting one of the images of Marilyn Monroe from his Marilyn Diptych painting. The pop artist gained worldwide notoriety for this artwork (which would come to be his signature style), with reproductions of various colors of this same silk-screened image. Warhol signs in black marker to the bottom right of the commemorative poster from the show, which ran from 17 February through 28 March 1971. Measures 20″ x 30″. Faint creasing to edges, overall near fine. Accompanied by the original tube from the Tate Gallery, and also with a COA from University Archives. Sold for $6,227.
