Known for his suave debonairness and crushing good looks, Ronald Colman became a leading British actor who successfully transitioned during the Golden Age of Hollywood from the silent era of film to the talkies.

Many years later and his illustrious career has endured the Hollywood canon. We sold in a past auction the following statuette —
1947 Oscar for “A Double Life” — Best Actor Award
As a four-time Academy Award nominated actor in his career, from the 1929 film “Bulldog Drummond” to the 1942 film “Havest,” he won in 1947 for his role in “A Double Life” as “Anthony John,” an actor playing “Othello” who comes to identify with the character.
The Academy presented the award for Best Actor to Colman on 20 March 1948 at the historic Shrine Auditorium in LA. The award is particularly scarce as it’s one of the last Oscars to become publicly available — award recipients were forbidden to sell their Oscars after 1950.
Method acting takes on a whole new physique in the film, as Colman’s character plays Othello and devotes himself to the part in an extreme way — his mind soon overcome with the rage and murderous jealousy synonymous with Shakespeare’s Othello.
Colman co-starred with Signe Hasso and Edmond O’Brien in this film noir gone crazy and as Film Reference puts it, “Our sense of Colman having a go at Shakespeare is fully tested twice in the film: on opening night, when his style is conventionally theatrical, and near the end, when he replays the same scene, prey to guilt and madness, in rhythms and tones that are decidedly cinematic.”
Check out this famous scene in which Colman, a mad actor in the film, begins to go even madder.
