William Faulkner’s Signed “Sanctuary” First Edition, First Printing — In Scarce, Original Dustjacket

Southern American writer William Faulkner signed first edition, first printing of his “Sanctuary,” published by Jonathan Cape & Harrison Smith: New York: 1931. The winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature and two-time Pulitzer Prize-winner inscribes the fly-leaf: “Dr. A. J. Liebmann / William Faulkner / New York / 17 March 1943” in black ink. Faulker’s dark tale of murder runs 380pp., bound in gray cloth boards with fuchsia paper accents and fuchsia lettering. Top edge black. Slight wear to board edges and minor cocking to spine, else near fine. The scarce, original dustjacket features a geometric printed design in black, white and blue. Negligible staining to panels and light wear to the edges. Chipping to the top edge of the spine leaves with small paper loss. Very good condition. Sold for $8,513.

Very Nice Copy of “Tom Sawyer” With a Mark Twain Autograph

Excellent copy of “Tom Sawyer,” dated 10 May 1899 with a nice Mark Twain autograph. Inscribed on front free endpaper: “Truly Yours Mark Twain / May 10, 1899.” London: Chatto and Windus: 1899. A later edition of the classic that became the wellspring of American literary fiction, with wood-engraved illustrations by True Williams. In this quintessentially American novel, Twain introduces Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn and their mischievous adventures in antebellum Missouri. With one marginal small tear to preface, light toning and occasional staining to pages. Original blue cloth boards with gilt lettering. Spine is rubbed and frayed at head and foot with cracking hinges, some page loosening and rubbed corners. Very good overall. Dark Mark Twain autograph. Sold for $7,500.

Rudyard Kipling Signed Handwritten Poem — ”When Earth’s Last Picture is Painted”

Rudyard Kipling signed handwritten poem ”When Earth’s Last Picture is Painted”, dated ”6:1:09”. Beautiful poem reads in full: ”When Earth’s last picture is painted / And the tubes are twisted and dried / When the oldest colors are faded / And the youngest critics have died / We shall rest, and faith, we shall need it / Lie down for an aeon or two / ‘Till the Master of all good workmen / Shall call us to work anew. / And those that were good shall be happy / They shall sit in a golden chair / And splash at a ten league canvas / With brushes of comet’s hair / And they shall have real saints to draw from / Magdalene, Peter, and Paul / They shall work for an age at a sitting / And never be tired at all. / And only the Master shall praise us. / And only the Master shall blame. / No one shall work for money. / No one shall work for fame. / But each for the joy of working, / And each, in his separate star, / Shall draw the thing as he sees it. / For the God of things as they are! / Rudyard Kipling”. Poem was written two years after Kipling won the Nobel Prize for Literature. 24 lines on two pages measures 5.25” x 7.75”. Toning, else near fine. Sold for $3,049.
