Georgia O’Keeffe was an American artist of the 20th century. Often referred to as the “Mother of American modernism,” her artwork had a significant role in the development of the artistic movement in the early part of the 20th century. O’Keeffe is best-known for her paintings of large flowers, New Mexico landscapes and New York City high-rises. As of 2014 she holds the record for the highest selling price for a painting by a woman, at $44.4 million.

Autograph Letter Signed Regarding Her Famous Painting, ”Pink Abstraction”

Georgia O’Keeffe autograph letter signed, dated 26 March 1970 from Abiquiu, New Mexico, and accompanied by original handwritten envelope with O’Keeffe’s name and partial address embossed on flap. Responding to a letter from a museum docent regarding her famous painting, ”Pink Abstraction”, currently housed at the Phoenix Art Museum, O’Keeffe writes, ”In answer to your questions about the painting ‘Pink Abstraction’ I can not tell you much. That winter in New York I had been painting pink tulips and when I went to Lake George in the spring I painted that ‘Pink Abstraction. It has nothing to do with the tulips – that is there are no tulips in it but it is the same color as what I had been doing in the city. That is all I can tell you. / The star on the back I put there when I was starting paintings much later – It meant that I thought it very good. / Sincerely / Georgia O’Keeffe”. Single page letter composed in blue ballpoint measures 8.5” x 11”. Accompanied by original envelope in O’Keeffe’s hand, postmarked 30 March 1970 from Abiquiu. Folds to letter and tears to envelope from opening, overall in very good to near fine condition. Accompanied by a copy of the letter sent to O’Keeffe. Sold for $894.

Autograph Letter Signed From 1960

Interesting Georgia O’Keeffe autograph letter signed, written to the husband of O’Keeffe’s niece, Barbara June O’Keeffe Sebring. In this letter, dated 28 November 1960 from Abiqui, New Mexico, O’Keeffe responds to a letter from Frank Sebring, reading in full, “Tomorrow I will be home a week but it always takes a few days to collect myself ~ / In answer to your letter of the 18th, I must say that for me it was a pleasure to see you and June and in some odd way her face haunts me. I was very fond of her father ~ liked him better than most of my family. She doesn’t look a bit like him ~ It was the expressions on her face that bothered me and I don’t know why. / About the drawings you embarrass me ~ They are $1,000 a piece but I would hate to take the money from you and I can not give them to you. / I have no idea what you have in mind spending ~ or what you can afford to spend. / You might tell me, this way I can see what I can do ~ / Sincerely / Georgia O’Keeffe-“. Two page letter on two sheets of translucent paper measures 8.5″ x 11”. Folds, and small strips of mounting tape on verso, otherwise near fine condition. Sold for $800.

Signed Program in Her Honor

Georgia O’Keeffe signed program for The M. Carey Thomas Awards in 1971, issued by Bryn Mawr College and honoring O’Keeffe that year. Program is signed on the front free endpaper, “To Gerome / Georgia O’Keeffe – 80.” in large, bold writing. Program features prints of many of O’Keeffe’s works throughout. Measures 8.5″ x 10.75″. Light toning and wear, overall near fine.
