“Ulysses” Signed by Matisse Rare Book
“Ulysses” by James Joyce. New York: Limited Editions Book: 1935. First edition rare book. Illustrated with 20 drawings and six original etchings created especially for this edition by Henri Matisse. Signed in pencil by Matisse on limitation page; numbered 162 of 1,500 copies signed. Octavo hardcover runs 420pp. Full buckram boards with gold embossed design to cover and spine. Book accompanied by original slipcase. Near fine condition. Sold for $3,850.
Claude Monet autograph letter signed, dated 21 June 1907, mentioning his intention to see an exhibition of Paul Cezanne’s work, likely the first posthumous retrospective at the Salon d’Automne in 1907. Upon his ”Giverny near Vernon, Eure” letterhead, and written in Monet’s characteristic purple ink, letter translates in full,
”Dear Sir, I am quite upset that I was unable to take advantage of your good thought, but I was away (which I rarely am) and I was unaware of your your [sic] letter until my return, but I will not deprive myself of the pleasure of coming to see your Cezanne exhibition. With all my thanks for thinking of me, please believe in my sincere sympathies / Claude Monet”. Two page letter measures 5.25” x 8”, on different leaves of bifolium, card-style stationery. Stamp of previous owner, otherwise near fine condition. Sold for $3,750.

Alberto Giacometti autograph letter signed, composed on 7 October 1951 when Giacometti was making his most famous sculptures of elongated figures. Composed from Paris, Giacometti describes his intuitive and spontaneous creative process to his friend Alice Hirschfeld. Letter translates from French in full, ”Dear Alice, I have thought several times of writing to you, but it was impossible for me to do so; since my return I have been in the worst possible mood just about every day, rarely is it this bad in any case, and even now it’s still not that much better, just enough to write you a couple words.
I think you are probably in Italy, I imagine you dashing off from one city to the next, hopefully in the sun. And then I would be delighted to see you if you come to Paris, I hope soon. / It is impossible for me to write you anything of here or of what I’m doing, I know absolutely nothing about it myself, all I can do is… be quiet. / Very cordially, / your Alberto Gi. / 46 rue Hippolyte Maindron / Paris, 14th arrondissement”. Single page letter measures 7” x 11.25”. Fold and light toning, else near fine condition. A very rare letter by the artist at the height of his most creative and lasting work. Sold for $3,000.
Fernand Leger Signed First Edition of His Catalog Book
French Artist Fernand Leger signed first edition of “La Forme Humaine Dans L’Espace” catalog, published by Les Editions de L’Arbre: Montreal: 1945. The painter of vibrant cubist abstract works signs “Fernand Leger” to his French autograph inscription upon the half-title page. He dates it August 1945, the year he became a Communist. Catalog of his works measures approximately 7.5″ x 9.5″. Creasing and soiling to covers and spine, light toning to leaves, and some scattered light soiling. Very good. Sold for $797.
