Who Was Alexander Gardner?
Alexander Gardner was hired as an assistant by photographer Mathew Brady in 1856. Once the Civil War broke out in 1861, he began assisting Brady with documenting the war. Brady failed for give Alexander Gardner credit for his work, so Gardner began documenting the war independently in 1863 and opened his own portrait studio. Gardner is also known as the official photographer of the Union Pacific Railroad as well as capturing images of Native Americans of the Great Plains.

The Famous Civil War Photograph, “Lincoln at Antietam” — Albumen Print by Alexander Gardner Measures 9″ x 6.75″
One of the most iconic photographs of Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War, period albumen print entitled “Lincoln at Antietam”, taken by Alexander Gardner who included it in his book “Photographic Sketch Book of the Civil War”. Taken on 3 October 1862, two weeks after the Union victory at Antietam, President Lincoln here visits Commanding General George McClellan’s campsite at Antietam, feeling that a personal visit was required to convince the General to seize the moment and pursue General Robert E. Lee’s retreating army. McClellan stalled however, and Lincoln would remove him from his command a month later. McClellan, in turn, would then run against Lincoln for the 1864 Presidential election. Sold for $3,200.

Albumen photo from Alexander Gardner’s 1866 “Photographic Sketch Book of the Civil War,” No. 84, entitled “View of the Interior of Fort Steadman,” a battle-weary piece of land that received daily assaults during the Siege of Petersburg. With accompanying text from the book noting, “The trees bear many marks of the compliments paid by the enemy during the almost daily severe artillery duels…” 9″ x 7″ photograph is affixed to a 16.5″ x 12.5″ book page; text is on separate page. Small tear and crease to text page, else near fine. Sold for $1,260.

Rare CDV of Abraham Lincoln, captured in late February 1861 shortly after Lincoln arrived in Washington for his inauguration. Identified as Lincoln image O-51B, photo was taken by Alexander Gardner, Mathew Brady’s representative in Washington, and bears the backmark: “Published by E. & H.T. Anthony, 501 Broadway, New York from Photographic Negative from Brady’s National Portrait Gallery.” Two nicks to margin and light wear. Overall in very good condition. Sold for $1,012.

Beautiful Alex Gardner albumen photo from Edwin D. Judd’s “Views of the War,” No. 20, September 1862, entitled “Burnside Bridge, Across Antietam Creek, Maryland.” With accompanying text from the book narrating the 1862 Civil War battle that took place on the banks of the creek, pointing out the scars still visible on the stone wall at water’s edge. 9″ x 7″ photograph is affixed to the 17″ x 12.5″ book page; text is on separate page. Near fine. Sold for $940.
