Albert Sidney Johnston Autograph Sold at Auction
Albert Sidney Johnston was a Confederate general of the Civil War and had earlier served as an officer in the Texian and U.S. Armies. Confederate president Jefferson Davies considered Johnston to be the most adept general in the early years of the Civil War and fellow officers greatly respected him. Johnston passed away in 1862 after being wounded during the Battle of Shiloh and is noted for being the highest ranking officer killed during the Civil War.

Albert Sidney Johnston Autograph Letter Signed 1839
Confederate General Johnston autograph letter signed “A. Sidney Johnston”. Dated 4 June 1839, written in his hand while serving as Secretary of War for the Republic of Texas. In full, “The 1st auditor will issue his draft on the Treasurer in favor of Col. W. G. Cooke Comy. & Qr. Master General for one thousand eight hundred & twelve dollars & 20/100 & charge the Qr. Master’s Department. To be paid out of the appropriation of $100,000 for expenses of the troops under the command of General T. J. Rusk.” One page, measuring 8″ x 10″. Slight chipping and several small areas of ink smudging, including one in last name of signature. Very attractive, well-preserved document. Sold for $1,883.

Confederate General A.P. Hill Twice-Check Signed — Dated March 1861 Just Before the Civil War Started
Confederate General A.P. Hill twice-signed check, addressed to himself, “A.P. Hill” and also signed by him, again as “A.P. Hill”. Holograph check is filled out by Hill for $30, dated 11 March 1861. Towards the end of the war, Hill said that he had no desire to live to see the collapse of the Confederacy and, indeed, was killed on 2 April 1865, just seven days before Lee’s surrender. Hill died on the front line at Petersburg after refusing to surrender to a Union solder. Check measures 6.75″ x 2.25″. Closed tear through the payee signature, perhaps as a bank cancellation, otherwise near fine condition. Sold for $1,666.
Jefferson Davis autograph letter signed. Letter dated 25 July 1887 is addressed to Col. Snead and reads in part, ”…many thanks for your…invitation to attend the Reunion of the Survivors of the 3d Georgia Regiment…pertaining to ‘men who still love the cause for which they fought’…” 2pp. letter on two delicate sheets of ruled linen stationery measures 5.5” x 9”. Pencil notation with Davis’ name to verso of one sheet, and slight separation at fold intersections, else near fine. Sold for $1,628.
General William Sherman autograph letter signed ”W.T. Sherman”. The Civil War General writes to magazine editor Edward W. Bok, on 15 March 1886, in full: ”Yours of March 13 is received and in Answer I am willing to State to you, but not for publication – that my family is Strongly Catholic, but that I am not – Until I ask Some favor, the public has no claim to question me further. Truly your friend, W.T. Sherman”. Single page letter on a sheet of 912 Garrison Avenue, St. Louis letterhead measures 5.5” x 8.5”. Light toning and wear and very light creasing, else near fine condition. Sold for $1,540.
