From 2014 Academy Award Winners to Golden Age of Film
Oscars have consistently been a popular auction item at Nate D. Sanders. We have seen some incredible prices realized for film memorabilia from Academy Award winners and the actual Oscars themselves have always been a draw.
Recently, Matthew McConaughey’s hat from Dallas Buyer’s Club sold at auction for $12,956.25, which was a spectacular price realized for this item whose minimum bid was $3,000. In that same March auction, Marlon Brando’s Stetson hat from his award winning role in The Godfather sold for $26,797.50. It was for this role that Brando won his second Oscar.
However, a few months prior, Orson Welles’ screen-used trophy from the film ”Citizen Kane” was on auction. We had the actual iconic trophy That Orson Welles holds during the film, which symbolized the height of Kane’s power and ambition.
This trophy sold for $275,544.
Academy Award from 1949 Sells for Six Figures
Produced by MGM in 1949, the film “On the Town” starred Frank Sinatra and Gene Kelly as sailors, with Ann Miller and Betty Garrett as their love interests. This Oscar was presented to Lennie Hayton for his score in the popular musical during the 21st Academy Awards Ceremony.
This Oscar sold for $128,540. There were seventeen bids on this 1949 Oscar, which had a minimum bid of $1000.
Academy Award from 1943 Sells for Six Figures
Again, another Academy Award from the 1940s sold for six figures. This time, the Oscar was from the 15th Academy Awards in 1943, and the film was Johnny Eager, in which Van Heflin won Best Supporting Actor for his role as Jeff Hartnett. That role beat Frank Morgan in “Tortilla Flat”, William Bendix in ”Wake Island”, Walter Huston in ”Yankee Doodle Dandy” and Henry Travers in ”Mrs. Miniver”.
This Oscar statue sold for $173,728 and had 30 bids. The minimum bid for this Oscar statue was $5,000.
Another 1940s Academy Award Winning Film
This time, it was an Oscar for the 1942 wartime romantic film “This Above All” awarded to Art Director Richard Day. Interestingly, the film was adapted from a novel written by Eric Knight, the same author who created “Lassie”.
This Oscar sold for $102,152 with 16 bids. There was a minimum bid on this Oscar of $2,500.
We have a new auction starting soon, with film memorabilia and much, much more. It’s always interesting to find out which items will be popular each month. If you are interested in bidding, you can find out more about how to bid on our auctions here.
