Who Was Aaron Burr?
Aaron Burr was an American politician and started his career as a lawyer joined the Continental Army as an officer during the American Revolutionary War. He later became a senator from New York in 1791 and served as the third vice president between 1801 and 1805. Many remember Burr for his 1805 duel with Alexander Hamilton where Hamilton was fatally shot. Perhaps Burr’s biggest contribution to politics was his establishment of rules for the first impeachment trial for procedures in the Senate chamber and many are still adhered to today.

Autograph Letter Signed as Revolutionary War Major — Sold for $2,500
Scarce Revolutionary War autograph letter signed “A Burr ADC” with postscript on verso signed “AB”. Integral leaf addressed by Burr to “Colonel Nielson / Cranbury” and docketed “Genl Putnams Letter/21 Febry 1777.” Burr writes, “The General has ordered Capt Campbell immediately back to Cranbury and from thence to be returned to [“Brunswick” crossed out] S. Amboy properly guarded by the Way he came … he is permitted to write to Mrs Campbell from Cranbury but to make no longer Delay. You will immediately let Mrs Campbell know that she has Liberty to pass to the Enemies Lines with her Family and Furniture … Campbell and his Attendant must be carefully watched and should any…in future arrive at your Post detain them till they can be reported to the Genl. I am Sir in behalf of yr Genl yr most Obt Sevt A Burr ADC.” Postscript on verso: “Capt Nielson will direct the particular Rout Mrs Campbell shall take. AB.” One page handwritten letter on laid paper, measuring 6.5″ x 8.25″. Irregular edges and small tears, otherwise very good condition. Sold for $2,500.
Letter Signed — Sold for $1,250
Aaron Burr letter signed, written by the Vice President sometime after 1801, as it reference his son-in-law, Joseph Alston. Dated only Tuesday Morning, Burr writes to The Honorable Dr. Mitchell, likely Samuel L. Mitchill, who served as Senator from New York beginning in 1804. Burr writes, ”Dear Sir / Have the goodness to inform me by the bearer of this where Mr. Dickens may be found. Less it may not be in my power to see him in town, if you should happen to meet him, let him know that it will give me great pleasure to see him at dinner. My son in law Mr. Alston too, who leaves town tomorrow morning for Albany would be much gratified by an interview with him. / I am also on the eve of departure for Rhode Island – Respectfully…A. Burr”. Single page bifolium letter with integral address leaf measures 7.875” x 9.75” as folded. Infill to small paper loss on second sheet from wax seal, and mounting remnants to verso. Folds and small split along seam. Very good condition. Sold for $1,250.
