Who Was A.A. Milne?

A.A. Milne was a playwright and children’s author who is remembered for his Winnie-the-Pooh books and poetry. His Pooh books revolved around a boy named Christopher Robin, named after his own son, and his plushies. Milne collaborated with artist E.H. Shepard who illustrated the original Pooh books. Milne was also an established playwright and adult fiction author, however the sheer fame of his children’s books overshadowed his adult works.

First edition, first printing of A.A. Milne’s beloved classic children’s book, ”Winnie-the-Pooh”, complete in its original dust jacket. London: Methuan and Co., 1926. Beautifully illustrated throughout with full page drawings by E.H. Shepard, this is the first book that Milne wrote with Christopher Robin, Pooh, and the gang as the singular focus of the story. Signed First Printing of ”Winnie-the-Pooh” — Sold for $5,313

First edition, first printing of A.A. Milne’s beloved classic children’s book, ”Winnie-the-Pooh”, complete in its original dust jacket and signed by the equally famous Pooh illustrator, Ernest H. Shepard. London: Methuan and Co., 1926. Shepard signs the title page, ”Ernest H. Shepard” in black fountain pen.

Beautifully illustrated throughout with full page drawings by Shepard, this is the first book that Milne wrote with Christopher Robin, Pooh, and the gang as the singular focus of the story. With all first printing points present: ”First Published in 1926” on copyright page; green cloth boards stamped with Christopher Robin and Pooh in gilt on front; endpapers illustrated with maps of ”100 Aker Wood”; yellow jacket with ”7/6 net” price on spine; ”117th thousand” printed on rear panel of jacket.

A very well-preserved copy with only slight cocking to spine, toning to endpapers, and slight separation starting on page 33. Overall in very good plus condition. Jacket is almost equally well preserved, with faint dampstaining and light chipping; very good condition. Book is consigned by the great-grandchild of the recipient, A. McArthur Morison, who lived near the area of 100 Acre Wood in East Sussex and knew Shepard as a result. Sold for $5,313.

Signed Limited Editions of “The House at Pooh Corner” & “Now We Are Six” — Sold for $4,375

Rare limited editions of “Now We Are Six” and “The House at Pooh Corner, both signed by the author A.A. Milne and the illustrator Ernest H. Shepard, and housed in the original dust jackets. London: Methuen & Co, 1927-28, issued the same year as the first trade editions.

“Now We Are Six” is signed by both men in black fountain pen on the limitation page, where this copy is designated as 54 in the limited edition of only 200. In this collection of poems, 11 feature Winnie-the-Pooh, with Shepard’s illustrations of the beloved bear accompanying. Bound in the publisher’s rust and tan buckram boards, with title label to front cover and spare label on rear pastedown. Hand-made paper with deckled edges, and illustrations throughout. Also with price of 42 net on spine of jacket. Bookplate of previous owner, A. McArthur Morison, to front pastedown, and toning to endpapers, else near fine. Sunning to jacket with edge chipping, overall very good.

“The House at Pooh Corner” is signed by both Milne and Shepard in black fountain pen on the limitation page, where this copy is designated as 39 in the limited edition of only 350. Milne introduced the ever popular character of Tigger in this volume, based upon his son’s stuffed tiger. Bound in the publisher’s cream and blue buckram boards, with title label to front cover. Hand-made paper with deckled edges, and illustrations throughout. Also with price of 42 net on spine of jacket. Some foxing to covers and toning to endpapers, else near fine. Jacket is lightly soiled with some chipping, overall very good.

First Printing of “Winnie the Pooh” — Sold for $2,000

Rare U.K. first edition, first printing of A.A. Milne’s beloved classic “Winnie the Pooh.” Published by Methuan and Co: London: 1926. With “First Published in 1926” on the copyright page, indicating the first printing, and also containing the rare, original dustjacket. Beautifully illustrated throughout with full page drawings by the author’s friend, E.H. Shepard, with likenesses of the familiar characters very much as they appeared in later “Pooh” books. Though “Winnie the Pooh” is the second in the “Pooh” series following 1924’s “When We Were Young,” it remains the most recognizable and popular. Light chipping and wear to the book; a small stain to the rear cover of dustjacket, some creasing and light chipping. Overall a very attractive and well-preserved copy in very good condition. Sold for $2,000.

Signed Copy of “The House at Pooh Corner” — Sold for $1,220

Rare 1928 edition of ”The House at Pooh Corner” signed by the author ”A.A. Milne” and the illustrator ”Ernest H. Shepard”. The second volume of Winnie-the-Pooh stories, this book introduces Tigger and bids an emotional farewell to Christopher Robin when he departs for boarding school. E.P. Dutton & Co., Inc.: New York: 1928. Printed the same year as the first edition, this limited edition is numbered 186 of 250 copies. Larger than the first edition, the book measures 7.25” x 9” and is bound in green cloth. Pages have a slightly glossy finish and deckled edges; black and white illustrations throughout. Front cover has a partial circular white ring and some scuffs, backstrip has some dampstaining. Covers have expected wear at the edges and corners and front joint is starting to split. The pages are tightly bound, clean, lightly discolored at the outer edges. Very good. Sold for $1,220.

Signed Copy of “The Christopher Robin Story Book” — Sold for $1,066

Author A.A. Milne and illustrator Ernest H. Shepard sign the limitation page of ”The Christopher Robin Story Book” published by E.P. Dutton & Co., Inc.: New York: 1929. Limited edition #78 of 350. This hardcover book contains 171pp. of classic Winnie the Pooh vignettes and poems with illustrations on nearly every page. Milne, a British author and playwright, based his wildly successful children’s books on his own son Christopher Robin Milne and the imaginary life of the boy’s teddy bear. Green cloth boards are partially covered by illustrated tan paper with black lettering. Bright green endpapers and deckled tail and fore-edges. Front free endpaper has a penciled marking reading ”Sippy”. Sold for $1,066.
