Joseph Heller Catch-22 1st Edition
Joseph Heller was a novelist, short story author and screenwriter. He employed a unique writing process in which he didn’t begin writing a story until the first and last lines were conceived. Heller is perhaps best known for his first novel, Catch-22, a satire that many consider to be among the most important books of the 20th century. The book has sold ten million copies since 1961 and has been placed on several top 100 book lists.

“Catch-22” by Joseph Heller. New York: Simon & Schuster: 1961. First edition, first printing rare book. 443pp. hardcover. Classic WWII black yarn follows the plight of paranoid American bombardier Captain Yossarian, who seeks to escape military duty on the basis of insanity. Yossarian’s appeal proves futile since, according to army regulation Catch-22, men who ask to be grounded prove sane through concern for personal safety, while truly crazy people agree to fly more missions. Lettering stamped in white on spine. Fading to spine and mild soiling to boards. Excellent edition. Sold for $818.

Aldous Huxley’s “Brave New World,” London: Chatto & Windus: 1932. First edition, first printing accompanied by first edition dustjacket. One of Huxley’s most popular works, a quintessential novel of ideas and the definitive critique of the technology based ‘rational’ society. Original blue cloth boards, spine lettered and tooled in gold, top edge dyed blue. Spine is darkened from slight sunning but remains tight; interior pages remain clean. Dustjacket shows slight restoration to flap folds and vertical edges. Overall excellent condition. Sold for $2,830.

Rand’s celebrated final novel set in a dystopian America popularized the philosophy of Objectivism and rational self-interest. Limitation page is signed ”Ayn Rand” in blue ink and indicates this is number 721 of a 10th Anniversary signed edition limited to 2,000 such copies. At 1168pp., this is her lengthiest piece of literature. Bound in blue cloth boards with gilt lettering and top edge blue. Measures 6” x 8.75”. Some minor blue ink to spine and scratching to bottom edge, else near fine. Sold for $2,188.

“The Sun Also Rises” by Ernest Hemingway, Charles Scriber’s Sons, New York: 1926. First edition, first state. Hardcover octavo rare book bound in black cloth with printed gilt label on front cover and spine; fore edges untrimmed. One of only 5,090 copies issued in the first run, bearing the first-issue “stoppped” on page 181. Wear to boards and spine title, though interior has only minimal foxing. A rare edition of Hemingway’s second novel in very good condition. Sold for $1,304.
