Pie Traynor Autograph Sold

Pie Traynor was a Hall of Fame third baseman with the Pittsburgh Pirates between 1920-1937, and was once regarded as the best third baseman in the MLB. He was also an excellent hitter and had a batting average of .366 in 1930 which is considered his best season. Following Traynor’s retirement as a player, he worked as a manager, broadcaster and scout for the Pirates.

Nate D. Sanders Auctions sold some Pie Traynor autograph letters signed for as high as $1,300.. Please see below:

1935 Pie Traynor Autograph Letter Signed

Autograph letter signed by Pie Traynor of the Pittsburgh Pirates to his wife Eve. Letter dated 12 May 1935 reads in part “Our team is playing good and bad baseball, tell Harry that Casey Stengel has a date that night. Letter is signed Love and kisses, Pie.” Letter written during Traynor’s last season with the Pirates. Lot also includes envelope written to Ms. Harold Traynor. Letter shows slight toning, envelope contains tears and chipping to edges. Overall very good condition. Sold for $1,300.

Pie Traynor Autograph Letter Signed 1935

Autograph letter signed “Pie” to his wife Eve, two separate pages, quarto, dated 21 August 1935, from New York City, with full tears down the middle of each. In part: “The game has just been called off, so I took this time to write to you. I am stiff all over, the double header in Boston was a long afternoon and now we have a double header tomorrow…My arm is not strong but it might get all right…Brooklyn is playing this afternoon and I will go over and see them…with all my love, Pie.” Sold for $848.

Pie Traynor Autograph Letter Signed 1935

Autograph letter signed “Pie” to his wife Eve, two separate pages, quarto, dated 30 June 1935, from St. Louis, with full tears down the middle of each. In part: “It has been a long day and tiresome trip, winning some and losing some. In New York, I got a wallop on the finger and I had to get out of the lineup…The summer weather has set in here in St. Louis. If it rains in St. Louis today or tomorrow we might have to stay Wednesday which is an off day…Have a pay check in my pocket and will wait and give it you…” Sold for $848.

Rare Signed Postcard Featuring Cy Young’s Hall of Fame Plaque — Postcard Signed by Cy Young — With JSA COA

Baseball Hall-of-Famer Cy Young signature on Cooperstown National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum postcard featuring Young’s HOF plaque. Young signs in blue ink across the width of the 3.5″ x 5.5″ card: “Cy Young”. During his 22-year baseball career, Young established numerous pitching records, some of which have stood for a century. In 1956 the “Cy Young Award” was created to honor the previous season’s best pitcher. The postcard shows minor toning and five small pin holes puncture the top, else very good condition. With JSA COA. Sold for $1,942.

Ty Cobb 8pp. Autograph Letter Signed — “…this year will be a bust for they have no player to induct due to a phoney rule that I have been crusading in my way to have amended…”

Ty Cobb autograph letter signed with content on the 1960 Hall of Fame induction ceremonies at Cooperstown, which was ultimately cancelled as there was no player to induct that year; this was the last of only three times that no player was inducted. Dated 18 June 1960, Cobb writes to his future personal assistant Marie Quinn: “…If I go to Cooperstown for June 27, I feel I should not per my pain…if they [his doctors] consent, then I will make trip to Cooperstown, for I have received letters from Hall of Fame people insisting, for to date only three Hall of Famers have stated they would go – this year will be a bust for they have no player to induct due to a phoney rule that I have been crusading in my way to have amended they did not so no elected player Etc. don’t want them to feel if I do not go they might think I am piqued Etc. which decidedly would not be the case, I have fully explained to them my physical condition, so I might not go, up to doctors in Atlanta if I do go…Ty”. Written on front sides of eight sheets of Cobb’s personal stationery measuring 6″ x 7″. Also with original mailing envelope. Overall in very good to near fine condition. Sold for $968.
