Sell Your James Bingham Art

James Bingham was an artist who had a highly successful career creating art for commercial use. His magazine advertisements include work for Cadillac, Corby’s Whiskey, Cannon Towels, Philadelphia Whiskey and the Association of American Railroads. He also did a Saturday Evening Post cover as well art for magazines such as Esquire, Good Housekeeping and Argosy.

Bingham also painted the art for Ray Bradbury’s short story “The Fog Horn” which is found in his book of short stories, The Golden Apples of the Sun. We at Nate D. Sanders Auctions sold Bingham’s illustration for Ray Bradbury at auction for $18,503. Here is the item description:

The following are additional art items we have sold:

Ray Bradbury Personally Owned Oil Painting, Titled ”Carnival” by Joseph Mugnaini — The Very First Mugnaini Painting Purchased by Bradbury & Which Ignited Their Professional Collaboration

Art by Joseph Mugnaini from the personal collection of Ray Bradbury, and indeed the painting which began the collaboration between the two creative men. Painting known as both ”Carnival” and “Caravan” is a nighttime scene depicting a train perched precariously high, filled with faceless figures, their arms raised in apparent cheering, waving pennant-style flags. The carnival theme is inextricable from Bradbury’s work, serving not only as the setting of his famous novel, ”Something Wicked This Way Comes”, but also as his inspiration to become a writer; Bradbury credits his interaction as a child with a carnival magician named ”Mr. Electrico”, who told him to ”Live Forever!”, as the impetus for his writing career. Painting, composed in oil on board, is circa 1952. Measures approximately 31” x 25”, matted and framed to an overall size of 36” x 30”. Frame shows wear but art appears near fine. With a COA from the Ray Bradbury estate. Sold for $23,153.

Hannes Bok Art From the Personal Collection of Ray Bradbury

Ray Bradbury personally owned art by early sci-fi fanzine artist Hannes Bok, whose career he launched. An outspoken admirer of Bok’s art, Bradbury actively promoted Bok at the first WorldCon (World Science Fiction Convention) in 1939, and ”Weird Tales” magazine picked up the unknown artist. Painting depicts a transparent queen chess piece being moved by a human hand, contrasting sharply with the dark background, in which a desert scape is visible with mountains on the horizon and nude men running through the scene. Acrylic on illustration board painting is unsigned. Matted and framed to an overall size of 15” x 21.5”. Near fine. With a COA from the Ray Bradbury estate. Sold for $10,000.

Ray Bradbury Personally Owned Oil Painting by Robert Watson

Ray Bradbury’s own Robert Watson painting, signed ”R. Watson ’59” at lower left. Watson had earlier been commissioned to design the cover art for the second edition of Bradbury’s ”The Martian Chronicles”, printed in 1953. This oil on Masonite painting depicts a solitary figure between two thick, stone walls, against a beautiful, but desolate blue sky background. Painting is housed in a thin wooden frame to an overall size of 17.25” x 21.5”. Minor chipping to frame’s corners, else near fine condition. With a COA from the Ray Bradbury estate. Sold for $8,043.
