Howard Chandler Christy Illustration Art and painting prices remain strong at auction, with his oil on canvas, Nudes at the Beach, expected to fetch as much as £100,000 at auction next week in London. Howard Chandler Christy illustration art and paintings sales peaked in 2010, then spiked again last year. Christy became famous for the “Christy Girl” his idealized image of the American woman who appeared first in advertisements in magazines and then later in recruitment posters for World War I. Howard Chandler Christy “Equestrian Girl”
Equestrian Girl, a Howard Chandler Christy painting, the American artist best known for his “Christy Girl” images in the vein of illustrator Charles Dana Gibson’s “Gibson Girl”. Christy’s oil on masonite painting, created during the 1940’s-50’s, features a three-quarter standing portrait of a young equestrian woman, wearing her riding outfit and top hat and holding a horse whip. Piece signed “Howard Chandler Christy” in his trademark signature at front upper left. While the subject’s angelic face stares full frontal at the viewer with an assured gaze, her body intriguingly stands twisted in profile. Christy sets his subject against a lush field of blue hues and turquoise commingling with dabs of umber. With its powerful 18″ x 40″ vertical dimensions, the painting provides incredible insight into the way Christy painted, as the detail of his attractive brunette, particularly the array of brushstrokes and colors in the face and eyes, lays bear Christy’s unique technique. Some white paper remnants on lefthand background field, created during the painting’s storage by a previous owner, does not greatly obfuscate the painting’s colors nor does it interfere with its subject. Attractive watercolor by Howard Chandler Christy of a ”Christy Girl”, his iconic interpretation of fashionable women during the Jazz Age. This woman wears a bowler hat, short fur jacket and carries what looks to be a flag. Signed ”Howard Chandler Christy”. Visible portion measures 15” x 20”, matted to a size of 20” x 28”. Pencil notations on verso indicates this painting was used in a Brown & Bigelow catalog. A few barely noticeable water spots, otherwise near fine condition. Sold for $3,125.
