1955 Brooklyn Dodgers Autograph Sold

The 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers were the World Series Champions for the first time and only time while calling Brooklyn their home. Many notable players on the 1955 roster included Hall of Famers Jackie Robinson, Roy Campanella, Pee Wee Reese and the current oldest living Hall of Famer Tommy Lasorda.

We also sold the following Brooklyn Dodgers memorabilia:

1955 Brooklyn Dodgers World Series Ring — Dodgers Owner Stephen W. Mulvey’s Replacement Ring

1955 Brooklyn Dodgers World Series replacement ring featuring a diamond at center, owned by Stephen W. Mulvey, whose family co-owned the Dodgers from 1912-1975. 1955 would be the singular World Series championship of the Brooklyn Dodgers, who beat their cross-town rival, the Yankees in the spectacular 7-game showdown, finally securing baseball’s ultimate crown. Not only was this the first and only win by the Dodgers in Brooklyn, it was the first time in MLB history that a team would come back to win the World Series after losing the first two games. Ring is engraved ”HJ 14K” to inner band, indicating it’s from sometime after 1980 when the jeweler Dieges & Clust was sold to Herff Jones. Otherwise it’s looks exactly as the original 1955 ring, cast in 14K white gold with a round-cut diamond at center, set against a Dodgers-blue stone, encircled by ”Brooklyn World Champions”. Right shank features a globe with ”Dodgers” written over it, and ”First / 1955”. Left shank reads ”B” with Mulvey’s name over a baseball. Ring size is 11.75. Near fine condition. Consigned directly from the Mulvey family. Sold for $6,250.

Original 1957 Ordinance & Map Approving the Dodgers Move to Los Angeles & the Transfer of Land in Chavez Ravine to Build Dodgers Stadium — From the Dodgers Archives

Nice lot of two items from the Dodgers archives related to their move from Brooklyn to Los Angeles in 1958. First item is a large 17” x 19.25” map of Los Angeles near Chavez Ravine, the site of Dodgers Stadium. Land is delineated into several sections: ”Property now owned by City”, ”Property not now owned by City”, ”Park Property”, etc. On the back of the map is a full reading of Los Angeles Ordinance No. 110,204, approved on 17 September 1957 that authorized the Dodgers move to Los Angeles, reading in part, ”Whereas, the Ball Club is willing to acquire such property, and would, at its cost and expense, construct a major league baseball stadium for…the BROOKLYN DODGERS…Ball Club will cause to be moved to the City of Los Angeles…”

Second item is an original onionskin copy of the same ordinance, but in its draft form, not yet fully written. Fascinating document first outlines broad strokes of the agreement, with conditions of both the City and the Ball Club, ending with, ”To cause ‘Dodgers’ move to Los Angeles” and in ”Conclusion / Details not provided, will use best efforts, subject Council approval.” Document measures 17” x 14”. Although the ordinance would pass in October 1957, the land transfer was met with enough controversy to require a special ”Yes on Baseball” referendum in 1958, passed by Los Angeles voters by a mere 25,000 out of 677,000 votes. The rest, as they say, is history. Both items are folded in fourths, in very good plus condition. From the archives of the Mulvey family, co-owners of the Dodgers from 1912-1975. Sold for $2,015.
