Apollo 8 Flown Heat Shield Segment, Comprising a Charred Plug from the First Manned Mission to Orbit the Moon

Very rare heat shield segment flown on the historic Apollo mission, not only the first manned mission to leave Earth’s low orbit and summit to the moon, but also the first manned mission of the Saturn V rocket. Segment is a charred plug, here preserved in lucite on a wooden base, with a plaque reading “First Manned Lunar Orbital Flight / Apollo 8 / Dec. 21-27, 1968″. Measures 4″ x 5.5″ x 3.125”. Very good plus condition. Very rare, with only one other recent example found at auction. Sold for $19,020.

Jack Swigert’s Personally Owned Apollo 13 Flown Heat Shield Plug — A Piece Which Endured Incredible Circumstances During the Famous Mission

Rare Apollo 13 flown heat shield plug encased in a circular piece of lucite and engraved in black along bottom, ”Apollo 13 / April 11-17, 1970”. Heat shield plugs are made of incredibly lightweight fiberglass ‘honeycomb’ which is hand-filled with an ablative resin material by air gun in order to limit high heat exposure during re-entry. The crew endured incredible circumstances after launching 11 April 1970, when two days later, they were forced into an emergency turn-around before ever reaching the moon. Fortunately the astronauts expertly improvised a repair to the spacecraft and narrowly escaped disaster, ultimately returning safely to Earth. Plug measures 1.5” in diameter with ”37” engraved to bottom; lucite casing measures 3”. Near fine. With an LOA from Jack Swigert’s sister.
Sold for $3,750.

Scarce Apollo 4 Flown Heat Shield Segment — Large Segment Measures 4.75″ Long

Apollo 4 flown heat shield segment, taken from the Command Module of the first Apollo mission, flown 9 November 1967. Segment is charred at bottom from reentry, housed in vintage acrylic with slip about the sample and mission, which was the first to test the Saturn V launch vehicle. Segment measures 4.75″ long x 1.875″ wide x 1.25″ tall, encased in lucite measuring 5.5″ x 2.75″ x 2″. The name of E.N. Pellerin appears on underside. A few minor surface scratches and minor yellowing to acrylic. Very good plus condition. Scarce. Sold for $1,800.

Apollo 16 Flown Robbins Medallion — Serial #58 From the Personal Collection of Astronaut Story Musgrave and With His LOA

Flown Robbins medal from Apollo 16, one of only 98 flown medallions, with the serial number 58 stamped on the rim. Medallion features the raised mission insignia on the obverse, an eagle perched atop a shield over the lunar surface, surrounded by 16 stars and the surnames of the crew: John Young, Charles Duke and Ken Mattingly. Reverse features the launch, landing and return dates of 16-27 April 1972. Robbins sterling mark and serial number of 58 appear on the edge. Medallion measures 1.375” in diameter. Very good to near fine condition. From the personal collection of astronaut Story Musgrave and with his LOA. Sold for $10,395.

John Young and Charlie Duke Signed 10” x 8” Lunar Photo of Young Saluting the U.S. Flag During the Apollo 16 Mission — Duke Additionally Writes, ”Hey John…Come give me a big Navy salute”

Fantastic photo autographed by the two Apollo 16 moonwalkers: John Young and Charlie Duke. Photo shows Young standing next to the Lunar Rover on the moon, saluting the United States flag. He writes, ”John Young / 9th man on the Moon / Apollo 16 CDR”. His lunar partner then signs, ”Hey, John, This is perfect, you, the Rover, and the old flag. Come give me a big Navy salute. / Charlie Duke / Apollo 16 Moonwalker”. Both men sign in silver felt-tip, a dramatic presentation against the black sky. Satin-finish photo measures 10” x 8”. Near fine condition. With Steve Zarelli Space Authentication COA. Sold for $4,000.

Apollo 16 U.S. Flag Flown to the Moon — Signed by Crew-Members John Young, Thomas Mattingly and Charles Duke

United States flag flown to the moon on the Apollo 16 mission, affixed to the NASA certificate signed by all three crew-members: John Young, Charlie Duke, and Ken Mattingly. Certificate is also inscribed (likely by Mattingly) to the NASA engineer who received it: ”Don Holkan – Thanks for your part in making this possible”. Certificate reads at top, ”This flag was carried to the moon by the crew of Apollo 16”. Flag measures 6” x 4”, with certificate framed to a size of 18.5” x 15.5”. Uniform toning and spot of discoloration to flag, overall very good condition. Sold for $3,750.

Apollo 16 American Flag Flown to the Moon — Signed by Crew-Members John Young, Thomas Mattingly and Charles Duke

Rare 6″ x 4″ American flag flown to the moon on the Apollo 16 mission, with signatures of all three crew-members: “John Young”, “Tom Mattingly” and “Charlie Duke”. Signatures and an inscription (likely by Mattingly) appear on the presentation document upon which the flag is affixed. Inscription on left reads: “Sam — Thanks for keeping our gym in such good shape. We sincerely appreciate it.” The framed NASA presentation includes a printed header reading: “This flag was carried to the moon by the crew of Apollo 16″, the nylon flag at center and official Apollo 16 insignias at bottom. Framed to an overall size of 18.5″ x 15.5”. Very faint showthrough of glue to flag’s corners, else near fine. Sold for $3,032.

Charlie Duke Signed Apollo Saturn V Rocket Model

Charlie Duke signed Saturn V rocket model, a 1:200 scale model of the rocket that transported Duke on the Apollo 16 mission. Base is boldly signed “Charlie Duke / APOLLO 16 LMP” in silver felt-tip. Measures approximately 22″ tall. Near fine condition. Sold for $1,785.

Apollo 16 Astronaut Charlie Duke Signed Command and Lunar Module Model

Charlie Duke signed Command and Lunar Module model, as it looked before the Lunar Module detached from the Command Module to land on the moon during the Apollo 16 mission, where Duke served as Lunar Module Pilot. Model is signed on its base by Duke in silver felt-tip, “Charlie Duke / Apollo 16 LMP”. Hand-painted model is scale 1/48, measuring approximately 12″ deep x 6″ wide x 14″ tall. Small indentation to the wood base near Duke’s signature, else near fine. Sold for $1,760.

Apollo 16 photo, signed, ”Ken Mattingly”, ”John Young” and ”Charlie Duke”. NASA publicity photo is dedicated by an unknown hand, ”To: Steven W. Bell”. Semi-matte photo measures 10” x 8”. Toning and some wear to bottom edge, else near fine. Sold for $1,562.

John Young signed and inscribed official NASA photo, stamp-dated 10 September 1964 to verso. Young poses smiling in his silver spacesuit. Inscribed in black ink to upper right, ”To Jack / What the hell do you want this for?? / John”. Glossy photo measures 8” x 10” with slight curling to edges and toning to mat, else near fine.
