Original Captain Kangaroo’s Bunny Rabbit & Mr. Moose Puppets Obtained Directly from Bob Keeshan
The original Mr. Moose and Bunny Rabbit puppets obtained from Bob Keeshan aka Captain Kangaroo and used in production of his beloved and long-running series. The only other known pair were donated to the Smithsonian, making these the only Mr. Moose and Bunny Rabbit in private hands. Happily, Moose and Rabbit were impeccably cared for, having been professionally archived to museum standards for the last 25 years in a climate and humidity-controlled facility and are in superb condition. Custom-made Mr. Moose hand puppet features a chocolate brown plush body and sleeve with a structured head and snout. Moose’s eyes are cleverly constructed of ping pong ball halves (Moose was well-known for a recurring gag featuring falling ping pong balls) that are hand painted by production and adorned with long false eyelashes and fastened to the face with stick pins. The ears are lined in red fabric, and the mouth is lined with felt in a burnt orange color. Solid antlers are covered with mustard yellow felt. The upper portion of the head is covered in a slightly lighter brown plush than the body, sleeve and ears. Mr. Moose measures 29” in total height, 21” from antler tip to antler tip and 12.5” from the tip of the snout to the back of the head. Mr. Moose puppet retains a rich sheen to the fur with but a few tiny stains to Moose’s left antler and a tiny area of tearing to right antler at the edge. Toning to eyeballs and hand touch-ups by production artists to the paint on the eyes, else fine. Custom-made Bunny Rabbit hand puppet is constructed chiefly of the plush material used by classic toymaker Steiff. Plush body and arms are fawn color throughout, darkening to a rich caramel color at the middle of the back. Chocolate-tipped ears are lined with a flat beige fabric that appears to have been tinged with a blush color toward the innermost region. Solid formed head features variation in plush texture, with slightly longer fur around the sides. Gleaming orange eyes with light brown irises are set on the sides of the head. The down-turned v-shaped mouth is embroidered in red thread and extends up to the nose, which has been embellished with a hammered metal button. Five clear whiskers fan out from each side of the snout. Bunny Rabbit wears a pair of custom-made red acrylic cat-eye style glasses with applied silver glitter, his trademark accoutrement throughout the run of the series, and they are secured with a pin at center. An additional segment of matching plush has been sewn on to the bottom to extend the length of Bunny Rabbit for greater freedom in manipulating the puppet for filming. Measures 9” from paw to paw and 17” from the top of the head to the bottom of the sleeve. Slight toning to ear lining and a 0.5” separation to the seam is present below the arm on the puppet’s right, else fine. The beloved and often mischievous Mr. Moose and Bunny Rabbit were created and played by puppeteer and performer Cosmo Allegretti, and his other iconic character, Dancing Bear, was sold by Nate D. Sanders Auctions earlier this year for over $200,000. True fixtures of cultural history spanning generations, these characters engaged Captain Kangaroo and the American viewing public over four distinctive decades of American television. Sold for $224,579.

Available for the first time at auction, the animation artwork from the iconic title sequence of ”The Partridge Family”, designed by legendary title artist Sandy Dvore. This instantly recognizable piece features the mother partridge followed by her five cheepers (chicks), one of only two known pieces with the entire animated Partridge Family. The famous title sequence for the show, in which the mother partridge breaks out of her shell and leads her chicks, was originally done for the pilot by Dvore, and was subsequently used during the entire series because it was so clever and groundbreaking. At the time of the pilot in 1969, color was just arriving to television and title sequences until then had mostly consisted of black and white typeface, simply listing the name of the show. For ”The Partridge Family”, Dvore decided to not only incorporate color into the title sequence (taking color cues from the famous Mondrian-inspired bus that the family drove), but also used animation, which until then had mostly been limited to cartoons. The result is one of the most enduring title sequences in the history of television. Described in the seminal book on title sequences, ”Untitled” as ”…one of the most brilliant and most atypical designers of all time”, Dvore rose to prominence in the early sixties creating iconic illustrations for trade ads in the ”Hollywood Reporter” and ”Variety” for stars such as Judy Garland and Frank Sinatra. He soon segued to create a new art form, the film trade ad, and also designed the logos for entertainment companies United Artists, Lorimar and ICM. Artwork consists of several layers of paper cut-outs affixed to black paper background. All characters are original except for the feet, which were added later. Signed by Dvore at lower right on black paper. Visible portion measures 17.5” x 9.5”, framed to 23” x 15”. Near fine. A fine example of Partridge Family memorabilia. With LOA from Sandy Dvore. Sold for $50,000.

William Shatner on Leonard Nimoy & DeForest Kelley During the Early Days of ”Star Trek” — ”These early shows were quite an exploration…the three of us began to work together as a team…”
Handwritten signed recollection by William Shatner on the early days of ”Star Trek” and the camaraderie that developed between himself, Leonard Nimoy and DeForest Kelley. Composed on his personal stationery, Shatner writes, ”These early shows were quite an exploration. Not just the amount of work memorizing ten pages and preparing ten pages for tomorrow but in getting to know the other players. Obviously I spent most of the time with Leonard and DeForest. We would discuss what we were saying in the script – but also we began to explore each other’s brains – I found that Leonard and I had so much in common – same background, same journey up through the ranks – children, wife. It was the beginning of a wonderful friend. DeForest who was a southerner, was different. But what [a] lovely gentleman – beautiful manners, and such a kind way of speaking. He led a settled life and loved the routine of coming to work and going home to his beloved wife – the three of us began to work together as a team – Dialogue between characters can be like a tennis game, the conversational ball batted back and forth can make for good drama but also the audience can ” sense the camraderie between the actors. I loved that the camraderie. I wish I knew how to spell it. / William Shatner”. Single page measures 7.25” x 10.25”. Near fine condition. Also with an LOA by William Shatner. Sold for $3,125.
