Disney Original Concept Painting From 1964 for “It’s a Small World” by Mary Blair — Measures 20″ x 15″
“It’s a Small World” original concept painting, created in 1964 for Walt Disney by Mary Blair, a “Disney Legend” who designed concept art for “Cinderella”, “Alice in Wonderland” and “Peter Pan”. Originally a pavilion at the 1964 World’s Fair, “It’s a Small World” captured the attention of Walt Disney, who commissioned Mary Blair to adapt it into a ride at Disneyland. Her subsequent artwork is presented here — a gorgeous 1960s inspired castle-themed piece in colors of pink, green and gold against a contrasting black background. The entrance to the ride is clearly evident in the artwork, referencing Blair’s mod-castle aesthetic with soft colors. Board measures 20″ x 15″. Light edge wear and pinholes at corners, otherwise near fine. Beautiful, large concept art for the iconic Disney attraction. Sold for $15,332.

Original animation cel from Disney’s 1937 classic ”Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” featuring the most famous moment in the film, the Queen in her old hag disguise handing Snow White the famed poisoned apple. Snow White is portrayed in her iconic gown and with a red bow in her hair, innocently looking at the bright red apple. With ”Snow White and the Witch” handwritten in cursive pencil to left side mat below cel, along with, ”Original / WDP (Walt Disney Pictures)” in ink to bottom right. Cel measures 11” x 7.5”, matted in white with a gilt color frame to an overall size of 20” x 16”. Cel is pristine and in fine condition. With a COA from the Ray Bradbury estate. Sold for $15,000.

Walt Disney signed display of Bambi and Thumper cels, uniquely inscribed to fellow American icon Norman Rockwell, and on an original production background also used in the movie. Disney signs the mat in green wax crayon, ”To Norman / With Best Wishes / Walt”. Large display includes cels of Bambi, Thumper, two quail birds, grass and log, used in the 1942 classic film ”Bambi”, with the hand-painted background measuring approximately 11” x 9”, framed to a size of 19.375” x 17.5”. With ”Original WDP [Walt Disney Productions]” stamp above Disney’s signature. Some foxing and light discoloration to outer portion of mat. Cels remain in beautifully well-preserved condition, with only one hairline crack appearing on Bambi’s leg. With an LOA from Carl Sprague of Stockbridge, Massachusetts, Norman Rockwell’s town, whose wife Susan Merrill was previously marred to Jarvis Rockwell, Norman Rockwell’s son. Sold for $13,401.


Walt Disney signed animation cel used in Disney’s 1940 classic “Pinocchio”, the groundbreaking follow-up to the first full length Disney animated film, ”Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”. Very large cel, featuring Pinocchio & Jiminy Cricket, measures 4.5″ x 5.5″, with original background measuring 7.5″ by 9.5″, and mat measuring 15″ x 16″ upon which Disney signs, “To Gorden Crier / Best Wishes / Walt Disney”. Disney gifted Gordon Crier the cel after Crier produced a BBC program about Disney in the late 1940s, at the conclusion of which Disney asked Crier what his favorite cartoon was, to which Crier replied, “Pinocchio”. With Courvoisier Galleries sticker affixed to backing certifying that both the background and cel were used in the filming of “Pinocchio”. Walt Disney Productions stamp appears on mat, above Disney’s signature, reading “original / WDP”. Uniform toning to mat and small amount of abrasion to edges. Cel itself is near fine. With an LOA from Crier’s daughter and a COA from Phil Sears. A rare, special Disney signed cel from one of the classics in animated film, also unusual for its size. Sold for $12,000.

A “Disney Legend” who designed concept art for several Disney films including “Cinderella”, Mary Blair famously visited the South before creating concept art for “Song of the South”, with her research evident here in the landscape and mood. Gouache painting on board shows Br’er Bear, Br’er Fox and Tar-Baby about to set a trap for Br’er Rabbit. Board measures 13.5″ x 11″. Light edge wear and pinholes at corners, otherwise near fine. Hand painted animation cel from the Walt Disney classic “Fantasia”. The groundbreaking animated film is widely recognized as revitalizing the character of Mickey Mouse. Cel depicts Mickey, clad in his iconic sorcerer’s hat and red robe during the “Magic Brooms” segment, the most memorable portion of the film. Cel measures 11″ x 10″, framed to 16.5″ x 15″. With original Disney label on verso of frame. Near fine condition. Sold for $11,000.

Original animation cel from Disney’s 1939 classic ”Pinocchio,” the follow-up to the first animated film, ”Snow White and the Seven Dwarves.” This cel shows Pinocchio together with Mister Geppetto and Figaro in the famous ”Jealous Figaro” scene. Matted by Courvoisier, the official art gallery for Walt Disney Studios during much of the 20th century, artwork measures 6.5” x 6.75, framed to 13.5” x 14.5”. Printed slip affixed to verso reads in part, ”This is an original painting on celluloid, actually used in the Walt Disney Production of Pinocchio. It is one of a select few that have been released to art collectors. The remainder have been destroyed. Copyright 1939…Walt Disney Productions”. Cel is near fine with no cracking. Sold for $8,908.

Ray Bradbury’s personally owned ”Alice in Wonderland” Disney animation cel. Art from the classic 1951 film features a wide-eyed Alice encountering the living pair of eyeglasses. Hand-painted characters are cut out precisely and mounted to an illustrated background. Alice measures 4.5” x 5.25”. Glasses measure 5.5” x 4”. Background measures 13” x 11”, matted to an overall size of 19” x 18”. Toning to mat and a small smudge to Alice’s cheek, else near fine. With Disney COA stamp to right corner and Disney COA sticker to verso. With a COA from the Ray Bradbury estate. Sold for $8,319.

Original & Large Disney Cel From “Sleeping Beauty” — Depicting Prince Philip and Briar Rose in The Famous “Once Upon a Time” Enchanted Sequence
Incredibly rare and large Disney cel from the beloved 1959 film, “Sleeping Beauty”. Cel depicts Prince Phillip and Princess Aurora, aka Briar Rose, as her name was changed to conceal her cursed identity, during the beginning of the film when the star-crossed lovers first meet in the “Once Upon a Dream” musical sequence. Characters are placed over a forest backdrop. Framed to an overall size of 13″ x 10″. With an official Disneyland sticker to verso reading, ”This is an original handpainted celluloid drawing actually used in a Walt Disney production.” Near fine. Sold for $7,464.

Disney Cel From the 1939 Short Film “Society Dog Show” — Depicting Two of Disney’s Most Iconic Characters, Mickey Mouse and Pluto — Featuring Mickey in His Older Character Design
Original animation cel from Walt Disney’s classic 1939 cartoon short, “Society Dog Show”, which featured the trials and tribulations of Mickey Mouse and Pluto at a fancy dog show. This cartoon is particularly collectible as it features Mickey in his older appearance for the last time, most notably his black eyes without white around them, which changed later that year. Cel depicts Mickey walking Pluto into the show proudly, and though Pluto’s raucous behavior gets him booted, he saves a dog from a fire and becomes the show’s hero. With a Courvoisier Gallery label on verso, cel is done in gouache on trimmed celluloid, applied to a Courvoisier airbrushed background. Embossed with “1939 Walt Disney Prod”. Matted and framed to an overall size of 17.75″ x 17″, with viewable area of 8.5″ x 7″. Near fine condition. Sold for $7,422.

Walt Disney signed ”The Art of Animation”, also signed by 21 of Disney’s creative team. Authored by Bob Thomas and published by Simon and Schuster, Inc. in 1958, ”The Art of Animation” outlines the development of animation techniques by Walt Disney and his company, with interviews and examples from classic cartoons and movies. Signed ”Walt Disney” on the fly-leaf, almost filling the entire page, and countersigned throughout the book by Disney’s original artists: Ken Anderson, Xavier Atencio, Don DaGradi, Eric Larson (signs twice), Bill Justice, Tom Oreb, Bill Peet, Joe Rinaldi, McLaren Stewart, Gerry Geronimi, Tom Codrick, Don Griffith, Ernest Nordli, Ward Kimball, Frank Thomas, John Lounsbery, Marc Davis, Milt Kahl, Woolie Reitherman, Ollie Johnston and Les Clark. Together these men created, directed and animated ”Fantasia”, ”Bambi”, ”Alice in Wonderland”, ”Peter Pan” and scores of others, as well as ”Imagineering” Disneyland attractions. Bound in publisher’s beige and grey boards, book measures 8.25” x 11.25” and runs 188pp. Previous owner’s name written to front board, and light wear to boards. Interior is bright and clean. Overall in very good condition. Sold for $6,404.

Walt Disney Signed “Bambi” Cel — Featuring Bambi and Thumper, Along With Thumper’s Four Bunnies
Walt Disney signed “Bambi” cel, used in the 1942 classic film and with a hand-painted set-up of the forest. In this cel entitled “Bambi and Thumper”, Bambi meets Thumper’s four bunny children. Boldly signed “Walt Disney” in green wax crayon on the mat, matching the color in the set-up. “Original WDP [Walt Disney Productions]” stamp appears above Disney’s signature. Cel measures 10.75″ x 7.75″, in original frame measuring 15.75″ x 12.75″. Some flaking to celluloid and light toning to mat. Overall in very good condition. Paper has been removed from back of frame, so it’s unknown whether this is a Courvoisier piece. From the estate of Chic Young. A very unique “Bambi” cel, as signed by Disney. Sold for $6,250.

Scarce Walt Disney signed copy of his animated masterpiece, ”Walt Disney’s Fantasia” by Deems Taylor. With an introduction by Disney and a foreword by Leopold Stokowski, conductor of the Philadelphia Orchestra who scored the motion picture. Simon and Schuster: New York: 1940. First edition. Book has ”Danny Moyer” written to cover and is signed by various Disney members inscribing notes to Moyer, including Disney himself who signs title page, ”To Danny Moyer / With Best Wishes / Walt Disney” in his iconic handwriting. Book has 20+ incredible personalized illustrations throughout, presumably by various Disney illustrators who additionally write personal notes to Moyer wishing him good luck in his next endeavor. Illustrated book contains a wealth of background information on the groundbreaking animated classic, including blurbs about the pieces of music performed for it. 158pp. are bound in putty color cloth boards with blue print lettering, measuring 9.5” x 13”. Some foxing, toning and wear throughout, and splitting along spine. Housed in a blue cloth slipcase with elegant leather spine. Very good condition. Sold for $6,250.

1959 Disney Animation Cel of “Maleficent” From “Sleeping Beauty”
Disney animation cel of “Maleficent” from “Sleeping Beauty”. Cel depicts the 1959 film’s notorious villainess looking appropriately devious, her raven sidekick perched on her hand. Hand-painted production cel is matted against an illustrated background to an overall size of 12″ x 14″. Nickel-sized spot of bubbling to Maleficent’s cloak and a tiny bubble to the raven between wing and body, else near fine. With Disney COA sticker to verso. Sold for $5,838.

Walt Disney signed cel of Goofy from the 1942 Disney short film, ”How to Play Baseball”, as well as a cel of Bashful from ”Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”. Disney signs the ”Baseball” cel in teal crayon on the mat, ”To Tom / from / Walt Disney”. Disney mat bears ”original WDP” stamp, and pencil inscription identifying film. Cel and background measures 7” x 7.5”, with Disney mat measuring 14.5” x 14”, all framed to a size of 22” x 21.5”. Cel is in fair condition with several areas of paint loss, but still intact. Mat has some toning, pinholes and foxing, overall in good to very good condition.
Second cel is of Bashful from ”Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”, the first Disney film released in 1937 to critical and popular acclaim. Cel and background measures 4.5” x 5.75”, framed to 10.75” x 12.75”. With label from J.J. Gillespie Gallery, stating that the cel was used in the production of the movie. Cel remains in very good to near fine condition. Sold for $4,813.

Walt Disney Signed Mat Showcasing ”Alice in Wonderland” Dye Transfer Print
Walt Disney signed studio mat holding a dye transfer print of ”Alice in Wonderland”. Disney’s large signature and paraph measures approximately 6.5” x 2.5”, signed upon the cream-colored studio mat in pencil. Lustrous dye transfer prints were sold at The Art Corner Store in Disneyland, and also given out as gifts, though ones signed by Disney are rare. Mat measures approximately 17” x 13.5”, framed to 22” x 18.25”. Minor toning to mat, else near fine condition. Sold for $4,659.

Walt Disney signed studio mat holding a dye transfer print of Donald Duck, part of a limited edition of 100 prints used in advertising for ”Der Fuehrer’s Face”. Disney’s large signature and paraph measure approximately 6.75” x 2”, signed upon the cream-colored studio mat in red pencil. Print measures 11.5” x 9.25”, and mat measures 16” x 15”. Print has some moisture spotting. Light soiling to mat, uniform toning, and bends and chipping to edges. Pinhole at top center. Very good condition. Sold for $4,576.

Walt Disney signed studio mat holding a dye transfer print from ”Bambi”, featuring Bambi with Thumper and Flower. Disney’s large signature measures 5.75” x 1.5”, signed upon the cream-colored studio prepared mat. Lustrous dye transfer prints were sold at The Art Corner Store in Disneyland, and also given out as gifts, though not many were signed by Disney such as this example. Mat measures 17” x 13.5”. Faint wear and soiling to mat and light discoloration to bottom left. Overall very good condition. Sold for $4,538.

Walt Disney signed animation cels of Donald Duck and José Carioca, used in Disney’s 1942 classic ”Saludos Amigos”, the sixth Disney animated feature film and the first produced by Walt Disney Productions. Large cels of Donald Duck and José Carioca are from the ”Aquarela do Brasil” segment of the film, where Carioca shows his friend Donald around South America and introduces him to the samba, which he plays here on his makeshift umbrella. The film also marks the first appearance of José Carioca. Two cels each measure approximately 2.75” x 4.5” on background measuring 7.5” by 7”, and mat measuring 14” x 15” upon which Disney signs, ”To Joe / With Best / Wishes / Walt Disney”. With Courvoisier Galleries sticker affixed to backing certifying that the cels were used in the filming of ”Saludos Amigos”. Walt Disney Productions stamp appears on mat, above Disney’s signature, reading ”original / WDP”. Light uniform toning to mat. Cels have some cracking and lifting, but remain attractive. Disney’s signature, in large green crayon, is bold and near fine. Overall in very good condition. With a COA from Phil Sears. A rare, special Disney signed production cel from of the earliest Disney animated films. Sold for $4,250.

Rare Walt Disney signed reproduction cel from the 1955 classic ”Lady and the Tramp.” Beautiful full ”Walt Disney” signature, with a flourish, appears on the mat surrounding the illustration from ”Lady,” showing the title characters along with Trusty the bloodhound and Jock the Scottish terrier. One of Disney’s most popular and successful movies, ”Lady and the Tramp” surpassed all other Disney movies at the box office when it was released in 1955 except for the classic ”Snow White and the Seven Dwarves.” This reproduction cel is part of a limited edition and measures 10” x 8”. Cream-colored mat measures 16.75” x 15.75”. In very good condition, with light uniform toning and light foxing to the mat. Large, bold signature is prominent in the display.
