Ty Cobb Typed Letter Signed — Regarding His Yearning to Retire — “…I am getting tired of the competition and being away from my family so much…”
Ty Cobb typed letter signed, dated 15 December 1927, on “Tyrus R. Cobb / August, Ga.” letterhead. Letter, typed in black ink, is addressed to sports agent Christy Walsh and discusses Cobb’s desire to retire. Reads in part, “Dear Christy: — I know you think that I am a terrible fellow for not writing you ere this but the fact is I have just been unable to write and give you the information you wanted. In the first place I really and truly want to retire from the game — I am getting tired of the competition and being away from my family so much. I have had a lot of base ball and it is getting time that I step out. I have received numerous letters from fans since the season closed asking me not to retire, adding to my record etc., etc. Then, within the last two weeks I have received two very flattering offers. I haven’t encouraged anyone and haven’t given out anything which might indicate that I would entertain an offer. Mr. Mack is very anxious to have me back but I am still anxious to retire. Of course, I am not going to say absolutely that I will retire for no man should make a hasty decision; then there is always a chance for an unusual offer, and I still have a year or so left which makes my position rather unsettled — although, unless I get an unusual offer I think I am safe in saying that I will not be playing next season. If I shouldn’t play ball I am very sure that I will spend the summer abroad with my family. If you can draw any conclusions from what I have told you, all very well. If I don’t play next season I would I would like to do the World Series for you…” Signed clearly, “Ty Cobb” in black ink. Letter, measuring 8.5″ x 11″, has light folding throughout, else near fine. Detroit Tigers outfielder Ty Cobb autograph/ single signed baseball. Sentiment reads, “To the best cub / From / Ty Cobb / 5/7/58” and is signed in Cobb’s trademark green ink. American League ball is slightly yellowed, else near fine condition. Accompanied by PSA/DNA authentication stating that the Ty Cobb autograph is authentic.. Rare version of a Ty Cobb autograph. Sold for $2,780.

Vintage pearl-finish black and white photo of Ty Cobb leaping into the air. Signed and inscribed in black fountain pen, “To Jules From Ty Cobb.” 4″ x 5.5″ photograph has clipped corners and lightly trimmed edges, scattered creases, minor brushes to signature and inscription and adhesive remnants to verso. Overall in very good condition. Sold for $2,007.
Ty Cobb Autograph Letter Signed Regarding Stock Market Investment Opportunities One Week After the Stock Market Crash — Cobb Famously Became Rich From the Market
Ty Cobb autograph letter signed, dated 27 November 1929, on “Tyrus R. Cobb / August, Ga.” letterhead. Four page handwritten letter is addressed to Cobb’s agent Christy Walsh and discusses numerous topics, including Cobb’s sympathies over Walsh’s wife being sick, his suggestions for potential stock market investments, and job placement prospects for his friend, football coach Tatum Gressette. Reads in part: “…consult your banker and buy now some gilt edged common stocks in high grade companies on a yield basis where quoted prices are close to book value and can get a 6 to 10 % return on fine stocks and you will make more money in 12 months than you ever thought you could for now everything is down to bargain counter prices…I have a friend who is coach of our Richmond Academy Junior College team Augusta, Ga. All local boys who have walloped the stuffing out of the opposition 54 out of 55 consecutive games, some record…now this friend of mine, Coach Gressette by name, is one of the finest fellows…he surely has got something in coaching line…now he is ambitious and wants to go higher wants something better wants more money…you have several coaching friends, I surely would like to see this fellow do better…I know coaches know of openings and would like to know of some good man to recommend so sound out some of your friends if your can without compromising yourself and advise me…I feel complimented that I have an opportunity to recommend him…Sincerely, Ty”. Gressette went on to become head football coach for The Citadel Bulldogs in Charleston, South Carolina from 1932 until 1939. Letter, measuring 8.5″ x 11″, is on 4pp., with folding and toning throughout, and staple at top center. Very good condition. With PSA/DNA COA. Sold for $1,606.
