A fine set of official state china from the George W. Bush administration, forming an instant collection of White House china. Sold for $14,033.

Very rare Abraham Lincoln White House china plate ordered by Mary Todd in early 1865. Plate is from the known ”Buff Set”, a less ornate and rather minimal design used for everyday occasions at the White House. Most of the Buff Set collection is now housed in the White House or the Smithsonian, with very few pieces still in private hands. Cream colored dish with a buff border and gilt circular edge also has a gilt circle at center. Made by ”J.K. Kerr” of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, whose company was known as ”China House” or ”China Hall.” This was the second set ordered by Mary Todd, just two months before the President’s assassination, and the bill for the china remained outstanding until Johnson took office. With a copy of a notarized letter as provenance from the original family who owned this plate, whose great grandfather bought the pieces at auction in the 1880’s. Provenance also includes copies of letters from both the Smithsonian and The White House, to whom the family gave other pieces of this china set. The letters confirm the history of the pieces and thank the family for the donations. Plate has a ”581/30” tiny sticker attached to verso and no other markings or denotations. Minor flecks of wear, else very good to near fine condition. Sold for $8,711.

White House Oyster Plate in the Rutherford B. Hayes Style
Colorful oyster plate designed for the Rutherford B. Hayes administration by Theodore Davis for Haviland Limoges. China plate features five wells in the likeness of opened blue point oysters, surrounded by painted shell, seaweed and water designs accented in gilt. The pattern was so popular upon its debut that it was made available to the public, distinguishable from the official White House china by the presence of a patent number, not found here. This plate was produced in or after 1880, and therefore likely used by Presidents Arthur or Cleveland who reordered the china in 1884 and 1886 respectively. Verso is inscribed in red overglaze, ”FABRIQUE PAR / HAVILAND & CO; / d’apres les dessins / DE” with Davis’ printed signature underneath in black overglaze, ”Theo: R. Davis”. Additionally ”H & Co” in green underglaze and ”DESIGN PATENTED / AUGUST 10TH 1880” in blue overglaze. Underside also shows America eagle. Plate measures 8.75” in diameter, with scalloped edge. Near fine. Sold for $7,421.

Very scarce Oval Office service plate from the Bill Clinton administration. Oval Office china is used exclusively in the dining room adjoining the Oval Office where Presidents might eat during work hours. Since the dining table in the room is small – seating roughly 10 people, the china made for the Oval Office is small in number, making this service plate exceedingly rare. Plate features a large Presidential seal at center in gilt, surrounded by two bands of gilt and a gorgeous navy blue band with gilt hatched design. The underside is marked in gilt, ”Oval Office / 1996 / Lenox / W.J.C.” Plate measures 12” in diameter. Near fine condition. Sold for $3,495.
