Historic ”USA for Africa” Poster Signed by 24 Musical Artists From the 1985 Charity Single ”We Are The World” — Including Michael Jackson & Billy Joel
USA for Africa poster signed by 24 of its altruistic all-star members, plus a fingerprint by Stevie Wonder. The super-group was assembled to record the single ”We Are The World” to raise funds for famine relief in Ethiopia. The song soared as the first single ever to reach multi-platinum in sales. Large poster is signed by Harry Belafonte as co-creator of the project and by performers Michael Jackson, Billy Joel, Stevie Wonder (with fingerprint), Diana Ross, Paul Simon, Dionne Warwick, Kenny Rogers, Smokey Robinson, Lionel Richie, Steve Perry, Jeffrey Osborne, Daryl Hall, John Oates, Huey Lewis, Quincy Jones, Cyndi Lauper, Marlon Jackson, La Toya Jackson, Johnny Colla, Ruth Pointer, Sheila E., Bette Midler, Kim Carnes and Lindsey Buckingham. One of the most covered and influential songs of all time, ”Like a Rolling Stone” lyrics are here handwritten and signed by their creator, Bob Dylan. With this song, Dylan reinvigorated his passion for his own work and fully embraced rock music (”play it fucking loud” he told his band) as a complement to folk. Clocking in at 6 1/2 minutes long, the song was initially thought too long to be commercially successful, until listeners in the mid-60s harassed radio stations to play it in its entirety. ”Like a Rolling Stone” has been covered by Jimi Hendrix, The Rolling Stones and countless others, and inspired even more. Bruce Springsteen first heard it when he was 15 years old: ”on came that snare shot that sounded like somebody’d kicked open the door to your mind…The way that Elvis freed your body, Dylan freed your mind, and showed us that because the music was physical did not mean it was anti-intellect. He had the vision and talent to make a pop song so that it contained the whole world. He invented a new way a pop singer could sound, broke through the limitations of what a recording could achieve, and he changed the face of rock’n’roll for ever and ever.” Perhaps the greatest mystery in music is trying to figure out who Dylan is referring to in the song — even Andy Warhol has been mentioned — but ultimately, rock historians believe it speaks to anyone, even Dylan himself, who eschews an easy, pretentious life for one that is riskier but ultimately more fulfilling, with ”nothing to lose” and ”no secrets to conceal”. Bob Dylan Handwritten & Signed Lyrics to “The Times They Are a-Changin'” — The Song of a Generation
Scarce handwritten and signed lyrics by Nobel-Prize winning lyricist Bob Dylan of his classic, “The Times They Are a-Changin'”. Considered one of the greatest songs ever written, its powerful lyrics have transcended the political turbulence of the 1960s that gave birth to them to inspire subsequent generations, revealing their timelessness in the human experience. In recent years, Dylan has shied away from playing his masterpiece in concert which has imbued it with an almost mythical quality. Dozens of major recording artists have covered the song through the years, including Simon & Garfunkel, Peter Paul & Mary, The Beach Boys, Nina Simone, Billy Joel, Joan Baez, Tracy Chapman, Bryan Ferry and Bruce Springsteen to name a few. Dylan wrote the song in the fall of 1963, shortly after Martin Luther King Jr.’s March on Washington, wanting to create an anthem for social justice. As he said, folk music and the Civil Rights movement were natural allies and he felt he could make a contribution to the movement by writing a powerful, “hypnotic” anthem. Handwritten lyrics and signature have been authenticated by Bob Dylan’s manager. Single page measures 8.5″ x 11″. In near fine condition. Apart from the original draft, these are the only known lyrics of “The Times They Are a-Changin'” that have been offered at auction. Sold for $89,505.
Bob Dylan signed, handwritten lyrics from November 1961, when Dylan was performing at clubs in New York, shortly after he signed with Columbia Records. Dylan pens a song about Wisconsin, where he lived in late 1960 before moving to New York, and also where he spent time as a teenager at summer camp. The lyrics were given by Dylan to Peter Crago, a musician with whom Dylan briefly lived in New York in 1961. Full uncorrected lyrics by Dylan read,

1826 First Printing of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony — Complete Score — Incredibly Scarce
First printing of the Complete Score of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony in C minor, by Ludwig van Beethoven. “Cinquieme Sinfonie en ut mineur: C Moll de Louis van Beethoven. Oeuvre 67 Partition.” Leipzig: Breitkopf & Hartel: March 1826. Octavo book runs 182 pages and measures 6.75″ x 10.75″ inches. In original printed wrappers with edges untrimmed. Front wrapper has been restored with adhesive tape along the bottom and fore-edge. A near fine copy housed in a modern clamshell case. Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 in C minor is possibly the most recognized work of classical music ever written. Its dramatic four-note opening is known worldwide and remains rooted in popular culture. The symphony was written over a four year period commencing in 1804 and first performed in Vienna in 1808. Though the first printed edition appeared in 1809, it is believed that this edition is the first printing of the complete score, comprising all four movements. This is a remarkably well-preserved copy of this important and historic work. Incredibly scarce copy rarely seen at auction. Sold for $12,000.

Richard Strauss autograph manuscript signed for the final scene in his 1935 opera “Die schweigsame Frau” (“The Silent Woman”), a comedic opera written with librettist Stefan Zweig. Written on three 10.5″ x 14″ pages of bifolium manuscript, Strauss signs “Richard Strauss” at the top of the first page, where he also writes “Schwanengesang” (“Swan Song”). Sold for $10,500.

Scarce Sex Pistols concert poster, from the 1976 “Anarchy in the UK” tour. Poster lists tour dates and supporting acts, including “The Clash,” “Damned” and “Johnny And the Heartbreakers.” Poster advertises the tour’s cancelled Bournemouth Village Bowl appearance for 7 December 1976, never performed on account of the The Sex Pistols’ profanity laden television appearance. Poster measures 19.5″ x 29″, with some minor scratches, two 1.5″ tears at bottom and one 2″ tear at top. Three of the corners are chipped from mounting. Very good. Sold for $4,967.

Scarce Sex Pistols Poster for Their Final Tour in the UK — Poster Full of Quotes by Venues Stating They’re Not Welcome
Poster promoting the Sex Pistols’ last shows in the UK: their ”Never Mind The Bans” tour. The poster’s designer Jamie Reid puts the punk band’s image to work, proudly displaying a collage of rejection letter clippings from venues that refused to host them. One reads: ”…The unfortunate reputation they have gained seems to bring in its wake inevitable scenes of violence and resulting damage…” Slated to play eight shows in the UK from 16-25 December 1977, the turmoil-laden band had to cancel half of them and would never play the UK again. Sid Vicious would die of a heroin overdose on 1 February 1979 at age 21. Very large poster measures 26” x 38”. Toning, creasing, and scattered tears to edges and separation at fold intersections. In very good condition in a plain black frame. A scarce Sex Pistols poster from the height of their punk rock reign. With provenance from Christie’s. Sold for $3,281.
