Incredible collection of 40 signatures by the pioneers of the NASA space program, with 38 signatures within a first printing of “We Seven” and two additional signatures of Deke Slayton and Walter Cunningham signed on their business cards taped inside the book. The original Mercury 7 sign on their photo within the book, and the other men sign the front free endpaper. In alphabetical order, signatures include: Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, Alan L. Book itself shows only minor shelf wear, in very good plus condition. Apollo 1 crew-signed photo measuring 20” x 16”, showing Edward White spacewalking during the Gemini 4 mission. The three astronauts of the fallen Apollo 1 mission provide extraordinarily large autographs in this colorful photo, measuring approximately 6” x 3.5” as a group. Each man signs in black felt-tip, ”Edward H. White II”, ”Roger B. Chaffee” and ”Gus Grissom”. Slight buckling and wear to photo, with small abrasions and chipping to edges, able to be framed out. Overall in very good condition. A rare oversized Apollo 1 crew-signed photo. Sold for $7,500.

Roger Chaffee’s 1963 Astronaut Acceptance Letter, Signed By NASA Director Gilruth — “…great pleasure to inform you that you have been selected…to participate in Astronaut Training…”

Roger Chaffee’s original NASA acceptance letter on official NASA Manned Spacecraft Center letterhead, dated 16 October 1963 from Houston, Texas. Addressed to Lieutenant Roger B. Chaffee of Fairborn, Ohio. Reads in full: “Dear Lieutenant Chaffee: It is a great pleasure to inform you that you have been selected for assignment to the Manned Spacecraft Center to participate in Astronaut Training. It is planned to have you assigned to our Center early next year. Your specific reporting date will be coordinated with the Department of the Navy. The details of your assignment will be discussed with you after your arrival. Your background and proven abilities assure me that you are fully aware of the responsibilities you are assuming by accepting this appointment. I am certain that your forthcoming association with the Manned Spacecraft Center will prove to be of great benefit to our Country’s space program. Sincerely Robert R. Gilruth / Director”. One page letter measures 8″ x 10.5″. Several small pieces of transparent tape at edges and corners, not affecting text. Also includes an LOA from Martha Chaffee, the widow of the late Roger Chaffee, who died in a 1967 Apollo 1 pre-launch test. Recently sold for $7,767.50 as lot 41061 in Heritage’s 3 June 2011 sale. Sold for $3,750.
