Statue of Liberty Inauguration Invitation from 1886, Designed by Tiffany & Co.
Rare invitation to the Statue of Liberty inauguration, held at Bedloe’s Island, New York Harbor in 1886. Originally known as “Liberty Enlightening the World,” the statue was designed by French sculptor Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi as a gift of friendship from France. The 151-foot statue was shipped over in more than 200 packing cases and reassembled, with the last rivet fitted on 28 October 1886 during this dedication presided over by President Grover Cleveland. Tiffany designed card features a gold embossed wreath with crossed flags, and an image of the Statue on its pedestal, with the shields of both the United States and France. Visible portion measures 7.25″ x 5″, matted and framed to 11″ x 8.75″. Not examined out of frame, appears in very good to near fine condition. Sold for $1,631.

1886 Statue of Liberty Inauguration Invitation, Designed by Tiffany & Co. — ”Enlightening The World”
Rare invitation to the Statue of Liberty inauguration, held at Bedloe’s Island, New York Harbor in 1886. Originally known as ”Liberty Enlightening the World,” the statue was designed by French sculptor Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi as a gift of friendship from France. Invitation in calligraphy reads in part: ”…You are invited to be present on the occasion of the inauguration by the President of the United States, of the Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World…” Tiffany designed card features a gold embossed wreath with crossed flags, and an image of the Statue on its pedestal, with the shields of both the United States and France. Measures 7.5” x 5.5”. Toning and light discoloration, overall very good condition. Sold for $1,100.

Rare pamphlet entitled “La Statue de la Liberte, Eclairant Le Monde,” by Charles Talansier, dated 1883. Signed & inscribed to front cover by Bartholdi, in French, to his cousin, Berdot. Pamphlet shows Statue of Liberty in various stages of construction with two fold out folios illustrating aspects of the framework designed by Gustave Eiffel. 35pp. pamphlet measures 6.25″ x 9.25″. Pre-certified PSA/DNA COA. Portion of back cover missing, light foxing & soiling to front cover, missing lower corner tip to cover & opening pages. Good condition. Sold for $3,032.

Statue of Liberty Designer Frederic Bartholdi Autograph Letter Signed
Handwritten letter signed by French sculptor Frederic Bartholdi, best known for designing the Statue of Liberty. Undated letter in French to a Mr. Ney thanks his friend for some cards and arranges a time to meet. Letter reads in part, ”…I intended to…bring you the Niagara photograph…I would need to see you tomorrow…at your house or mine as you like…” He signs and underlines, ”Bartholdi”. Glue residue and newspaper remnant to verso of 4.25” x 5” blue note paper, else very good. Address panel on verso is postmarked, ostensibly from Paris. Sold for $425.
