Rare Confederate Parole Document From Appomattox Court House, the Last Battle of the Civil War
Rare Confederate parole document datelined Appomattox Court House on 10 April 1865, one day after the eponymous battle that effectively ended the Civil War. Partially printed document is signed by Lt. Col. Elijah Benton Withers of the 13th North Carolina Infantry, paroling a Private in the regiment. Slip reads, “The Bearer, Private N.E. Burton of Co. F 13th Regt. of N.C.I., a Paroled Prisoner of the Army of Northern Virginia, has permission go to [to] his home, and there remain undisturbed. / E.B. Withers, Lt. Col. Comdg. 13th Regmt. N.C.I.” According to General Order 43, enacted on 11 April 1865, paroled Confederate prisoners of war had to carry this printed certificate from Appomattox Court House in order to be acknowledged as such. Slip measures 7.75″ x 3.125″. Heavy wear with expected browning, chipping, and small holes along fold. Fully intact, in good condition. Sold for $2,179.
