Maurice Sendak was a children’s book illustrator and author who is perhaps best-remembered for his 1963 Caldecott Medal winning book Where the Wild Things Are. He also illustrated the Little Bear book series, authored by Else Holmelund Minarik, which was later adapted as a television show and movie. Sendak has received many awards and honors including seven Caldecott Honors, the Hans Christian Andersen Award and was inducted into the New York Writers Hall of Fame in 2013.

Below is a recent realized price for a 1st edition signed copy of Maurice Sendak’s Where the Wild Things Are with 2nd issue dust jacket. We at Nate D. Sanders Auctions can obtain up to this amount or more for you:

The following are some prices we have realized for Maurice Sendak memorabilia:

Rare First Printing of “Where the Wild Things Are” by Maurice Sendak, With First Printing Dust Jacket, Published November 1963

First edition, first printing of “Where the Wild Things Are” by Maurice Sendak, complete with the uncommon first printing dust jacket. New York: Harper & Row, 1963. With all first printing points, including the lack of the Caldecott award sticker on the front of the dust jacket, which was added by Harper & Row after recalling the edition to reflect the achievement shortly after publication. Other first printing points include the $3.50 price on the front flap of the jacket, along with the code “40-80” and “1163” indicating the publishing date of November 1963, and the correct three paragraph blurb. The jacket’s back flap also has the correct three paragraph blurb. The book itself shows the Library of Congress number “63-21253” on the title page and has no ISBN number on the rear board. A very good copy, with colorful pictorial endpapers and illustrations throughout. A “Books Are Fun” sticker appears on front pastedown, and a child’s signature appears on half-title page. Small tear at bottom of front free endpaper, a few spots on rear endpapers, and light shelf wear. The front flap is clipped at the lower corner, typical of all copies, and light chipping to jacket, with a discreet closed tear at top center. Overall in very good condition. Sold for $3,300.

Maurice Sendak Original ”Wild Things” Sketch Signed — 12.25” x 14.75”

Maurice Sendak original pencil sketch of his ”Wild Things” creations. The author of the 1963 children’s book ”Where the Wild Things Are” draws a captivating scene involving a dinosaur fossil and some Wild Things. He signs the lower right ”Maurice Sendak”. The story of a little boy’s foray into an imaginary world of endearingly sensitive oversized creatures is one of the most popular children’s stories of all time. Matted to an overall size of 17.5” x 20”, visible area of drawing measures 12.25” x 14.5”. Small .5” tear to top edge at center, light smudging, and a smudge to mat bottom edge, else near fine. Sold for $3,125.

Maurice Sendak Original Signed Sketches of 12 Characters — 13.25” x 6”

Maurice Sendak original signed ink sketches. The ”Where The Wild Things Are” author draws 12 different characters on a single sheet, including a few ”Wild Thing” monsters. He signs the lower right: ”Maurice Sendak”. Measures 12.5” x 5.5”. Near fine condition. Sold for $3,120.

Maurice Sendak Signed Original Sketch — Depicts Max From ”Where The Wild Things Are”

Original Maurice Sendak signed sketch of Max, the main character from his classic book ”Where the Wild Things Are”. ”Wild Things” has sold over 19 million copies worldwide, making it one of the highest selling children’s books of all time. Charcoal drawing on white sketch paper measures approximately 6.25” x 9”, with irregular left edge measuring 5.75” at its most narrow and 6.75” at its widest. Sendak signs his name to lower right, ”Maurice Sendak”. Near fine. Sold for $2,813.

Maurice Sendak Signed Sketch 1988

Maurice Sendak signed original sketch. An exceptional and rare piece from the author and illustrator of classic children’s books, including “Where the Wild Things Are” and “Into The Night Kitchen.” Superb original pencil drawing executed on a sheet of tracing paper measuring 15″ x 19″. The drawing shows one of Sendak’s iconic “Wild Things” wearing a ribboned wide-brimmed hat and devilishly peering over a book. Boldly signed beneath, “Maurice Sendak.” This drawing was created for an American Express advertising campaign in 1988. According to the volume “Illustrated Shopping Bags Created by Maurice Sendak” published by Left Bank Books, drawings such as this one were printed on shopping bags with the tagline: “Purchase Protection. When monstrous accidents happen, the American Express Card has you covered.” Not surprisingly, extant original bags are quite scarce. Fine condition. Sold for $2,756.

Original “Wild Things” Drawing by Maurice Sendak — Included With a Signed Limited 25th Anniversary Edition of “Where the Wild Things Are” — Near Fine Condition

Exquisite copy of “Where the Wild Things Are”, complete with the hand-drawn sketch of one of the “Wild Things” by Maurice Sendak, signed and dated October 1988. This 25th anniversary edition is number 70 of a limited edition of 220 copies, bound in publisher’s blue leather with illustrated endpapers, and housed in a custom suede-lined clamshell case, also with illustrated cover. New York: Harper and Row, 1988. Book is additionally signed by Sendak on half-title page. All edges gilt and with gilt illustration to front of blue leather cover. Book measures 10.25″ x 9.375″; clamshell case measures 11″ x 10.5″; drawing measures 5″ x 6″. Extremely rare keepsake of the beloved children’s classic, even more so in such near fine condition, with significant flaws to note. Complete in original mailing box. Sold for $2,700.

First Edition, First Printing Hardback of “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” by J.K. Rowling — One of Only 500 Copies, the Book That Started It All

The most coveted book in the Harry Potter canon, the first edition, first printing hardback of J.K. Rowling’s first novel, “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone”. This book is one of only 500 hardback copies published in the first printing, more scarce and collectible than the softcover published at the same time.

With all first printing points present, including “First published in Great Britain in 1997” on the copyright page, along with “Joanne Rowling” credited rather than J.K., and no space between Thomas Taylor and the copyright date (“Taylor1997”). Full number line “10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1” is present, as is the 10.99 pound price on rear board, Wendy Cooling quote to front board, and the spelling error of “Philospher’s” on rear board. Other early printing points are also present, including the repeat of “1 wand” on page 53, and “highchair” on page 8.

Since most of the 500 copies of the hardcover book were intended for library use, the number of extant copies is unknown, though estimated to be significantly fewer than the 500 published. All 500 were issued without a dust jacket, which wasn’t introduced until the third printing. This copy has part of the library laminate peeled off, corners of board professionally retouched, and previous owner’s inscription to front free endpaper. Some sunning to spine and minute cocking. A wonderful first printing, still in very good condition. A hallmark of children’s literature, one of the few hardback copies still available. Sold for $53,550.

Beatrix Potter Signed 1902 First Edition, First Impression of “The Tailor of Gloucester” — Very Rare

Beatrix Potter signed copy of her third book, “The Tailor of Gloucester”, Potter’s personal favorite of all her books. Published privately: London: 1902. Inscription on front free endpaper reads, “For Mr. Butler / from Beatrix Potter / Jan 16th 03″. This hardcover first edition, first impression includes 11 color plates and is one of 500 copies printed exclusively for Potter a year before the first trade edition by Frederick Warne & Co. This version of the text is longer than the first trade edition, and the cover illustration of the three mice was never used again. Measures 4.25″ x 5.25”. Tape on spine, wear to boards, and separation starting at joints. Pencil writing on front pastedown. Internal pages have some foxing and wear but are in generally clean, very good condition. A very rare, beloved children’s book. Sold for $10,000.

Antoine de Saint-Exupery Little Prince Signed Book Limited First Edition — One of Only 525 Signed Copies — Near Fine Condition

One of only 525 limited edition copies of Antoine de Saint-Exupery Little Prince signed book. First edition, published by Reynal & Hitchcock: New York: 1943. First edition signed copies are limited to 525 copies, of which this is number 271. In publisher’s red-stamped salmon cloth boards. Very minor foxing to limitation page and shallow crease to the bottom corner of the last three leaves. In the first issue dustjacket, with “$2.00” on front flap; small chips to spine ends, darkened spine and minor toning to front and rear panels. A near fine copy, housed in a custom gray cloth clamshell box.  Sold for $9,601.

Signed & Hand-Illustrated Copy of ”Curious George Goes to The Hospital” — H.A. Rey Inks a Sketch of George With a Dog

Authors H.A. & Margret Rey sign this copy of ”Curious George Goes to the Hospital”, and H.A. Rey sketches the curious little monkey playing ball with a dog. Houghton Mifflin: Boston: 1966. The authors of the popular children’s book inscribe the front free endpaper: ”To the Chapmans – human and canine – with all the best wishes! / from Margret Rey / H.A. Rey / June 23, 1967”. This first edition, second printing is complete with its original yellow dustjacket housing yellow cloth boards and illustrated pastedowns. Runs 48pp. and measures 7.25” x 9.25”. Staining to dustjacket and to bottom edges of book. Very good. Sold for $3,125.

Dr. Seuss Signed First Edition of “Bartholomew and the Oobleck” — Scarce 1949 Title Signed

First edition of Dr. Seuss’ “Bartholomew and the Oobleck” signed. Random House: New York: 1949. The author signs, “With Best Wishes…Dr. Seuss” upon the verso of the front free endpaper. King Derwin decrees that something new must come down from the sky and Bartholomew Cubbins saves the kingdom from the green, sticky oobleck. Light chipping to dustjacket with original 200/200 unclipped price. Minor edge wear to 9.25″ x 12.25″ book’s blue boards and light toning to pages. Overall very good condition. Sold for $2,500.
