Benjamin Franklin 1785 Document Signed as President of Pennsylvania — Excellent, Bold Signature

Benjamin Franklin signs an interest certificate, dated 19 October 1785, one day after being elected President of Pennsylvania. Until May of that year he had served the new American nation as ambassador to France. Now, in a position similar to a modern day governor, Franklin authorizes Pennsylvania Treasurer David Rittenhouse to pay ”to Gilbert Quirk late private of Musquetry of the Pennsylvania Line, or his order, the sum of two pounds eight shillings being one year’s interest on his depreciation certificate, due the tenth day of April 1782 agreeably to an act of The General Assembly, intitled, ‘An act to appropriate certain monies arising from the excise, for the payment of the annual interest due on unalienated certificates therein mentioned,’ passed the twenty-first day of March 1783, and out of the fund appropriated by the said act, for the purposes therein mentioned.” He signs boldly, ”B. Franklin Presid.” with a paraph accentuating his name. The certificate, issued in Philadelphia, is endorsed on the verso: ”Received the within contents in full / For George Bickham / Sam Fulton”. Minor toning and foxing to 7.75” x 6.25” document, with tape repair to verso. Overall near fine condition. Sold for $15,436.

Alexander Hamilton 1792 Letter Signed

Alexander Hamilton letter signed as Secretary of Treasury, describing the content of another letter originally enclosed with this one. Reads, “Sir, I herewith send you a copy of a Circular letter which I have this day written to the Collectors of the Customs. The arrangement therein suggested will conduce very much to the order of the [beliefs] of the Treasury and is presumed to be conformable with law.” Proud of his new set-forth plan, Hamilton continues to write, “I feel a confidence that it will meet with the cheerful coop[or]ation of the federal Courts and their respective Officers, that the arrangement itself, will be found well-adapted to the security of all parties/ I am Sir, with consideration/ Your Obed. Servant/ A Hamilton.” Marked “(Circular)” at the top left corner, and dated “Treasury Department/ June 8 1792,” the full-page letter measures 7.5″ x 8.5″. Folds, slight toning, and a water stain affecting only one word. Professionally matted with a portrait of the first Secretary of Treasury; overall the ink in bold and his signature are very clean, making this a valuable and fine piece. Sold for $9,562.

Alexander Hamilton Autograph Letter Signed.

Terrific John Hancock 1776 Revolutionary War Document Signed as President of the Second Continental Congress — Appointing Future Secretary of War, William Eustis, as “Surgeon” in the Continental Army

John Hancock document signed, appointing William Eustis as “Surgeon”, dated 1 January 1776, with Hancock’s distinctive signature and paraph in bold black ink. Eustis would later serve as Secretary of War, Congressman and Massachusetts Governor. Appointment reads in part: “…The Delegates of the United Colonies of New-Hampshire, Massachusetts-Bay, Rhode-Island, Connecticut, New-York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, the Counties of Newcastle, Kent, and Sussex on Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North-Carolina, and South-Carolina, to William Eustis…We reposing special trust and confidence in your patriotism, valour, conduct and fidelity, DO by these present constitutes and appoint you to be Surgeon in the Regiment of Artillery Command by Colonel Henry Knox in the army of the United Colonies, raised for the defence of American Liberty, and for repelling every hostile invasion therof…” Signed “John Hancock / President”. Document measures 14.25″ x 9.5″, with light dampstaining and five small holes along folds. Very good condition. Sold for $9,500.

Declaration of Independence Signer, Document With a Lyman Hall Autograph

Declaration of Independence signer, autograph document signed with a bold Lyman Hall autograph, who is one of the more scarce signers. Acting in his capacity as Governor of Georgia, Hall grants 600 acres of land to a Captain John Ducour, signing at the document’s conclusion, “L. Hall”. Datelined Savannah, 24 September 1783, half sheet measures 9″ x 5.75″. With docketing on verso. Document is inlaid and there is loss to left margin affecting three words. Housed in a blue linen folding case with a blue morocco spine lettered gilt. Attractive document in very good condition.  Sold for $9,518.

Elegantly Framed John Adams Land Grant Signed as President

President John Adams signed land grant, dated 8 July 1799, with a bold, clear ”John Adams” signature in black ink to verso of 2pp. document. Countersigned by Secretary of State Timothy Pickering, grant gives more than a dozen Revolutionary War veterans ”titles to certain lands lying Northwest of the River Ohio, between the Little Miami and Sciota.” With extensive handwritten notes detailing the exact partitions of the property. Document on 2pp., front and verso, measures 18” x 20.5” and is nicely and cleverly framed twice; the smaller frame housing the document measures 23.25” x 26” and opens on a hinge, so that both sides of the document can be viewed. This frame is then attached to a larger frame measuring 41.5” x 36”. The back of the document displays very bold signatures of both President John Adams and Secretary of State Timothy Pickering. Original blindstamped seal intact. Creasing and separation to fold intersections with two small stains in the lowermost third of the document, else near fine. Some bumping to frame corners and edges, else frames are near fine. Sold for $8,098.

President John Adams Signed 4-Language Ship’s Papers From 1797

As President, John Adams signs his full name in black ink to a ship’s passport concerning Jonathan Hodges, commander of the ship ”Hazen”, on 8 June 1797. Document is co-signed by Timothy Pickering, Secretary of State, and retains its paper seal of the United States at middle left. Printed in 4 languages: French, Spanish, English and Dutch, respectively. Document measures 19.5” x 15.5”, framed to 26” x 21.75”. Light toning, archivally repaired at intersecting folds, overall in very good plus condition. Sold for $7,563.

John Hancock & Samuel Adams Signed Judicial Appointment From 1793

John Hancock and Samuel Adams dual-signed judicial appointment, signed as Massachusetts Governor and Lieutenant Governor, respectively. Document appoints William Heath Esq. as Judge of the Court of Probate for Norfolk County, Massachusetts on 9 July 1793. Hancock boldly signs ”John Hancock” underneath seal, with his familiar paraph below signature. Adams signs ”S Adams” to verso of document. Measures 8” x 12.5” on one sheet. Folds, light toning and spotting. Ink remains very bold and legible. In very good to near fine condition given age. Sold for $6,250.
