Elton John custom-made costume designed by Kansai Yamamoto, who became an iconic designer for rock & roll legends like Elton John in the 1970s. Outfit was made during the 1980s and features an ornate and industrial-style coat made of black wool and flannel, with straps and wet-look cotton panels dispersed. Also includes a jerkin, blouson and trousers. With original ”Kansai International” tags intact. Provenance: Lot 1429, Elton John Costume Auction Vol. IV Diverse Collections, Sotheby’s, London, 8-9 September 1988. Sold for $8,567.

Incredible 55th Grammy Awards collection of signatures from 70+ leading musicians who have shaped the contemporary music scene. Each musician signed his or her name while backstage, either during rehearsals or the show itself, which was held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on 13 February 2013. Most signatures are quite large, some measuring 9” in diameter. Album includes 51 sheets with signatures on front and verso of each. Measures 11.75” x 11.75” on thick cream-colored cardstock. Front board has one minor indentation. Near fine overall. Elton John autograph letter signed, dated 21 November 1978 on “Watford Football Club” stationery. Letter discusses his new song, “Song for Guy” and reads in part: “Dear Paul, Thanks for the letter about ‘Song for Guy.’ He [Guy Burchett] was a smashing little bloke and I’m glad the song turned out so well. It’s being issued as a single in 10 days time – by public demand!…If it’s a hit it’ll be great to see Guy take his place in a little bit of chart history…All the best Elton”. With some minor toning and foxing in spots. Very good. Sold for $1,072.

Coveted instrument personally owned and played by music legend and 1960’s cultural icon John Lennon. The first time Lennon played an instrument with a keyboard on a record was for his collaboration with McCartney on 1965’s ”I’m Down”, from the B-side to Beatles single ”Help!” Mason and Hamlin brand reed organ, or pump organ, is made of walnut wood and features a dark cherry finish. Accompanied by a slip inscribed, ”Love to Julie / From John Lennon / xxxx” in red ink. Rubber lining on pedals has been replaced. Near fine. A Steinway brand piano of Lennon’s sold at Sotheby’s in 2000 for $2.1 million. Replaced rubber on the foot pedals, else near fine. With provenance from Sotheby’s including original catalog and house-issued certificate of ownership signed by Yoko Ono. Sold for $74,535.

Eddie Van Halen Personally Designed, Stage Played & Signed Guitar
Eddie Van Halen personally designed (hand-striped) custom guitar, owned and played onstage by Eddie at the 16 February 2008 show in Jacksonville, Florida. Charvel guitar is signed by Eddie in silver marker, with the Jacksonville concert date also written by him as well as ”Van Halen ’08”. In custom EVH (Eddie Van Halen) Charvel guitar case, and with COA signed by Eddie Van Halen showing serial number of 173, matching EVH plate on guitar. Near fine condition. David Crosby’s Own Gibson ES-335 Guitar — From His Days in “The Byrds”
David Crosby’s personally owned and played Gibson guitar, used by Crosby in “The Byrds,” one of the most influential bands of the 1960’s. Crosby’s role in “The Byrds” from the iconic group’s formation in 1964 until his departure in 1967 garnered him his first of two inductions into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Guitar is the widely recognized Gibson ES-335, with a Bigsby Vibrato tailpiece tremolo. Dating to 1958, this model was the first electric guitar to introduce the semi-hollow body design. Neck is one-piece mahogany beneath a rosewood fingerboard with mother of pearl inlays. Measures 16.5″ wide, 20″ long, and 1.75″ deep. Housed in a black hardshell case lined in orange velvet. Scattered nicks and bumping to top of headstock, else near fine. With an LOA from David Crosby. Sold for $25,428.

Takamine acoustic-electric guitar is model EF 341SC, and serial #10110447, housed in Takamine hard-shell guitar case. Lot also includes a Bon Jovi COA, originally sold by the band a charity auction, as well as original glossy 8” x 10” photos of Bon Jovi playing this guitar in Boston, and him signing it. Simmons signs “Gene Simmons” in silver pen on the black front and also writes in artistic, stylized handwriting for excellent visual appeal: “Rock & Roll All Nite / And Party Every Day – / You Drive Us Wild We’ll / Drive You Crazy – This is a Stage / Played Bass – KISS”. Stanley writes in silver pen on the black front, ”You Drive Us Wild – We’ll Drive You Crazy / Rock & Roll All Night and Party Every Day / Paul Stanley KISS” and ”This Is A Stage Played Guitar”. Lot also includes a signed COA stating that the guitar was used ”extensively on tour with KISS”, as well as photos of Stanley signing the guitar and playing it on stage. Fender Swinger guitar, personally owned by John Entwistle of The Who from 1969 when the band released their classic rock opera ”Tommy”. The Fender Swinger guitar is one of the rarest production guitars, with only 250 to 300 made and less than 30 in this Lake Placid Blue finish, aged to a deep green. Guitar shows serial #264153 on its neckplate, matching the guitar in John Entwistle’s book ”Bass Culture: The John Entwistle Bass Collection”, where it’s featured on page 56; copy of the book is included. Also included are two lot tags and lotting sticker from Sotheby’s where the guitar sold on 13 May 2003 as lot 191 in John Entwistle’s estate sale, ”The John Entwistle Collection”. Some nicks and chipping to body of guitar, as expected from use, overall very good condition. In Fender hardshell case measuring 41” x 14”, which has an old Continental Airlines tag tucked inside. A scarce guitar by one of the greatest rock ‘n roll bassists. Sold for $7,500.
