Ngo Dinh Diem (1901 – 1963) was the first president of the Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam) from 1955 until 1963. Backed by the United States, he initially promised to establish a Western-style democratic republic but his leadership was corrupt and ineffective, and marred by brutality, especially toward South Vietnam’s considerable Buddhist population. The United States eventually withdrew its support of Diem, and in 1963 he was assassinated in a military coup planned by his own generals.
