Edward Gibbon FRS (/ˈɡɪbən/; 8 May 1737 – 16 January 1794) was an English historian, writer, and Member of Parliament. His most important work, The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, published in six volumes between 1776 and 1788, is known for the quality and irony of its prose, its use of primary sources, and its polemical criticism of organised religion.
The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire is a six-volume work by the English historian Edward Gibbon. It traces Western civilization (as well as the Islamic and Mongolian conquests) from the height of the Roman Empire to the fall of Byzantium in the fifteenth century. Volume I was published in 1776 and went through six printings. Volumes II and III were published in 1781; volumes IV, V, and VI in 1788–1789.

Gutenberg Bible Leaf 193 Chronicles of Old Testament
Scarce leaf from the Gutenberg Bible, one of the earliest major books printed from moveable metal type, the invention that ushered in the Age of Enlightenment by democratizing knowledge through mass production of literature. Printed by Johannes Gutenberg in Mainz, Germany from 1450-1455, less than 50 complete or near-complete copies of the Gutenberg Bible are now extant, with nearly all those housed in public institutions. Singular leaves are also scarce, with the leaf presented here having been acquired by bookseller Gabriel Wells, whose purchase of an incomplete Bible in 1920 gave way to selling the individual leaves alongside an essay by A. Edward Newton entitled “A Noble Fragment”. Leaf is number 193 of the full Latin Bible, with the recto being the Prologue to 1 Chronicles of the Old Testament, and the verso the first part of Chapter 1 of 1 Chronicles. Each page features two columns of 42 lines in dark black Gothic type, accented by red and blue rubrication. Each copy of the Gutenberg Bible differs in its rubrication and illumination, with buyers at the time deciding upon these embellishments after the Bible was printed. The six-line rubricated letters of this leaf were likely added later, restored to match the original style. Leaf measures 11.125″ x 15.375″, bound on edge to portfolio measuring 11.75″ x 16″. Paper quality is still bright with very little foxing or discoloration compared to other examples. A stunning example from the book that changed the course of history. Sold for $136,500.
Henry VIII Document Signed as King of England — Offering Cardinal Lorenzo Campeggio the See of Salisbury — Campeggio Was Appointed to Decide Henry’s Infamous Divorce Shortly After This Appointment
Rare and desirable Henry VIII document signed as King of England and France and as Defender of the Faith. Document appoints Cardinal Lorenzo of Campeggio to the See of Salisbury, which had been promised to him in 1518 and received on 2 December 1524. Shortly thereafter, Campeggio became a key player in Henry VIII’s famed divorce from Catharine of Aragon, caught in the unenviable position of having to choose between Holy Roman Emperor Charles V (and Catharine’s nephew) or Henry VIII. Upon seeking a divorce from Catharine, Henry VIII sought nullification from the Pope, who dispatched Campeggio to England to settle the matter. Under enormous pressure from both sides, Campeggio denied the divorce, which sparked Henry VIII to strip Campeggio of his title. Campeggio did however, keep his life — after the decision, the Pope gave Campeggio the castle in Dozza, Italy and Charles took Campeggio’s family under his protective wing. Supremely rare 16th century document measures 13″ x 14.75″. In very good condition with folds throughout, small holes at folds and chips along left side. Nice, bold signature by Henry VIII. Sold for $49,374.
Important Henry VIII order signed ”Henry R”, as King of England and Ireland, commanding Sir Charles Brandon to gather troops in preparation for his planned invasion of France, as part of the Italian Wars. Dated 16 September 1512, only three years into his reign, Henry VIII here takes advantage of the Pope’s ”Holy League” against France to expand his territory in the northern part of that country. To that end, he orders the mustering of troops from the counties of Carnarvon, Merioneth, and Anglesey in Wales. Its compelling text reads in part: ”…’cause asmany of thaym as bee hable men for the warre to bee sufficiently furnisshed of thaire harneys and to bee always in arredynesse to doo unto us s[e]rvice under yo[u]r ledyng…” Those who refuse are ”…to be condignely punisshed according to his or thaire demerits in example of other that wolde semblably presume toffende herafter…” Sir Brandon, to whom this order is directed, went on to become the 1st Duke of Suffolk following success in August 1513 at the Battle of the Spurs — using the men culled from this initiative. A red seal is affixed to bottom center. Single page runs 16 lines on vellum and measures 11.25″ x 6.5″. Toning, creasing and some light staining, else near fine. An important document in the early years of the Italian Wars, which raged for more than sixty years, ultimately involving most of Europe in a complex conflict that spawned wars within wars. Sold for $40,954.
The Catholic Monarchs, Ferdinand II and Isabella I signed Royal decree as King and Queen of the Spanish Empire, dated 14 May 1491. Signed in large bold writing, ”Yo el Rey” (I the King) and ”Yo la Reyna” (I the Queen). Document instructs Juan Alfonso Serrano, a highly ranked ”pesquisidor” for the Crown, to allow a soldier, Juan Garcia Guerrero, to keep his land. At this time, Spain was driving out the Moors from southern Spain which necessitated someone to allocate these re-conquered lands. Serrano was the powerful individual responsible for this land allocation, in addition to his role of uniformly applying Spanish law. Document translates in full, ”From the King and the Queen / Bachelor Juan Alonso Serrano, Distributor of land in the city of Seville. By Juan Garcia Guerrero, a squire in our guards, it was made known to us of the continued good services of his father and grandfather, under the command of the city, and that they were sent out to the war against Portugal, where were stolen their horses and armor, and they made use of the spring and some land. He says they took it out of necessity to sustain themselves acquiring the farm that we had ordered given to some of their friends and later, settling there with their family, they gave to them. Now he says you wish to take from his possession the farm he has there that we had granted from what had belonged to the Moor Sufuz, and you say he should not enjoy use of that property. / He entreats and asks us because of our association with this to send you proof. For that end we order you to allow him to have and possess that farm in the manner he now has it and not to take it from him due to our volition in this matter, and so make an exception in consideration of the services he and his ascendants have done for us. Done in Barcelona the fourteenth of the month of May of One Thousand and Four Hundred and Ninety and One Years. / [signed] I the King I the Queen / By order of the King and Queen / Juan de la Parra / Copy so that Juan Alonso Serrano, Distributor of land in Seville, does not take from Juan Garcia Guerrero the possession of the farm that he was granted.” Additionally signed by three nobleman as witnesses. Single page document measures 8” x 9.75” Folds, small areas of worming and irregularly trimmed edges. Overall very good to near fine given age. Accompanied by a COA from University Archives. Sold for $10,068.
Winston Churchill Signed Copy of His Classic Work, “A History of the English Speaking Peoples” — First Editions in Original Dust Jackets
Winston Churchill signed first editions of “A History of the English-Speaking Peoples”. London: Cassell and Company Ltd., 1956-58. Churchill signs the bookplate on the half-title page of Volume I, “Winston S. Churchill”. Though begun during his “Wilderness Years” of the early 1930s, Churchill completed these volumes after World War II, giving attention to the “special relationship” of the United Kingdom and United States. He writes, “For the second time in the present century the British Empire and the United States have stood together facing the perils of war on the largest scale known among men, and since the cannons ceased to fire and the bombs to burst we have become more conscious of our common duty to the human race.” All four first editions are housed in their original price-clipped dust jackets, all in very good condition or better. Top edges red on all, in original red boards, each measuring 6.5″ x 9.75″ and housed in a 5.5″ x 10″ slipcase. Volume I is near fine, in a very good to near fine dust jacket. Vols. II-IV have been re-backed, preserving original endpapers, with some foxing to interior and dust jackets, and also light staining to the front board of Vol. III. In very good condition, with very good dust jackets, which have some foxing and sunning to spines. Overall a very attractive, well-preserved set, rare as signed. Sold for $3,438.

Verso has single column with 22 lines of Latin text. Page is made of virgin-vellum and measures 4.25″ x 6″. Near fine condition given age. Sold for $1,469.

Hand-painted manuscript page from the liturgical text ”Book of Hours”, from Tours in northern France, circa 1250. Double-sided page is beautifully rubricated in bright gold, blue and red. Single columns on each side contain 15 lines of Latin text. Page is made of virgin-vellum and measures 3.5” x 5”. Some rippling to bottom center, minor discoloration to edges and some foxing. Near fine given age. Sold for $1,250.
Bible Leaf From the Medieval Age, Circa 1250-1275 — Crusades Era Document on Vellum
Miniature medieval Bible page. Illuminated manuscript Bible page on vellum dates to the mid 13th century when pocket size Bibles were a common means of spreading Christianity to remote areas. Tiny Gothic script in Latin appears in brown ink with red and blue rubrication. Features a total of 56 lines of text, beginning with Ecclesiasticus (Sirach) 20:1 and running through 23:22. Translates in part, ”How much better is it to reprove, than to be angry, and not to hinder him that confesseth in prayer…The slipping of a false tongue is as one that falleth on the pavement: so the fall of the wicked shall come speedily…Flee from sins as from the face of a serpent: for if thou comest near them, they will take hold of thee. The teeth thereof are the teeth of a lion, killing the souls of men…The mourning for the dead is seven days: but for a fool and an ungodly man all the days of their life…” Thin sheet features text on both sides. Measures 4.25” x 6”. Hole in the margin at lower right is likely from original stretching. Very slight buckling to top edge. Near fine given age. Sold for $1,100.
Illuminated Leaf From 15th Century French Psalm Book
Beautiful leaf from a 15th century French Book of Psalms. Fifteen lines of rubricated and gilt text appear on each side of the vellum leaf, written in a Gothic script. These illuminated leaves were created in the middle ages by artist scribes, who wrote in extraordinary detail, embellishing the text with gold, red and blue dyes. Because of the labor involved, the books were quite expensive at the time, and individual leaves have since been collected as works of art. Leaf measures approximately 3″ x 4″. Light toning, else near fine. Sold for $756.
