Charles Ormond Eames, Jr. /ˈiːmz/ (1907–1978) and Bernice Alexandra “Ray” Kaiser Eames (1912–1988) were an American married couple of industrial designers who made significant historical contributions to the development of modern architecture and furniture through the work of the Eames Office. They also worked in the fields of industrial and graphic design, fine art, and film. Charles was the public face of the Eames Office, but Ray and Charles worked together as creative partners and employed a diverse creative staff. Among their most recognized designs is the Eames Lounge Chair and the Eames Dining Chair.

John F. Kennedy’s Rocking Chair, Used by JFK as President
One of the few rocking chairs owned and used by John F. Kennedy as President, who famously relied on his rocking chairs to relieve back pain resulting from his WWII injuries. Kennedy’s personal physician, Dr. Janet Travell, first treated JFK as a Senator in the 1950s, where she prescribed the use of rocking chairs custom-made to his specifications. Sold for $90,000.
Harry Truman’s personally owned rocking chair. Beautifully crafted wooden rocking chair was donated by Mrs. Truman in the fall of 1962 to the Women’s Guild charity sale at the Trinity Episcopal Church, the church where she married the president in 1919. Patterned cushioning is from the chair’s reupholstering in the 1950’s by Jennings Furniture in Independence, according to the Historic Furnishing Report of the Harry S. Truman Home and National Historic Site. Truman was known for making use of his rocking chair, having mentioned it in numerous interviews including one with Edward R. Murrow in which he joked, ”I do an immense amount of it [manual labor] from a rocking chair.” Staining to the upper left of the upper cushion, else near fine. Accompanied by an 8” x 10” notarized LOA, mounted on a wooden plaque, from the charity sale’s chairwoman, Mrs. W. Howard Huffman of Independence, Missouri. Sold for $23,116.
Scarce 110-year old chair from the administration of President William McKinley. Wooden chair, most likely mahogany, bears brass plaque on underside of seat which reads, ”Executive Mansion / President / William McKinley / Comr P B&G. / Colonel Theo. A. Bingham.” Colonel Theodore A. Bingham was responsible for renovating The White House, or the ”Executive Mansion” as it was then called, during the Benjamin Harrison administration approximately ten years before McKinley occupied the venerable residence. The federal-style wooden chair has a rectangular back and simple geometric solar design carved at top. The seat upholstered in royal blue leather is heavily worn with most of the leather torn off, exposing internal canvas, and not intended for sitting. The rest of the chair has some wear and rubbing, particularly to bottoms of legs, but still stands firmly making it a nice item for display. Back part of chair measures 14.5” x 19”; seat measures 16” x 17”, and entire chair from floor to top measures 36”.
Sold for $20,546.
Frank Lloyd Wright Signed 11″ x 14″ Photograph
Large Frank Lloyd Wright signed photograph. Wright inscribes the photo at lower right, “To Arthur / with a great hope – Frank / July 12/52″. At this time, though age 85, Wright was completing work on the Guggenheim Museum, one of his most important buildings. Matted to a size of 15.5″ x 19”. Near fine condition. Sold for $1,900.
Frank Lloyd Wright Signed Book “The Story of the Tower”
Frank Lloyd Wright signed first edition of “The Story of the Tower: The Tree That Escaped the Crowded Forest”, documenting Wright’s design and construction of the Price Tower. Signed “Frank Lloyd Wright / 56″ on the front free endpaper. New York: Horizon Press, 1956. Large format book is profusely illustrated with photographs, mock-ups and drawings of the tower, Wright’s only skyscraper in his long career. Measures 8.75″ x 11”. With dust jacket, in fair condition as it’s missing part of the backstrip. Book itself is beautifully preserved, in near fine condition. Sold for $1,751.
Frank Lloyd Wright Signed Autobiography — Inscribed to Tom Casey Who Ran Wright’s Home, Taliesin West
“Frank Lloyd Wright: An Autobiography” signed by the author and naturalist architect. New York: Duell, Sloan and Pearce: 1943, fourth printing. Inscribed on the title page, “To Tom Casey at Taliesin – Frank Lloyd Wright / 54”. Casey ran Taliesin West, Wright’s winter home in Scottsdale, Arizona, for many years. Hardbound book measures 8.5″ x 8.5″ and runs 561 pages. With silver lettering upon rust colored boards. Rubbed corners and previous owner’s inscription to front free endpaper. In very good condition. Sold for $1,545.
Frank Lloyd Wright Signed First Edition of His Autobiography
”An Autobiography, Frank Lloyd Wright” signed with Wright’s autograph inscription. First edition book published by Longmans, Green and Company: London, New York, Toronto: 1932. Wright’s dedication upon the fly-leaf reads, ”To the namesake of the ‘Big Chief’ – Leonard Dankmar Weil / From Frank Lloyd Wright”. Memoir runs 371pp., plus a 22pp. section of photos in the back. Bound in black cloth boards with gilt and red design and top edge red. Measures 7.5” x 9.25”. Bumping to board corners, cracking between fly-leaf and title page and slight cocking to spine, with some scattered chips to backstrip. Very good condition. Sold for $1,540.

Frank Lloyd Wright signed first edition, first printing of “The Natural House”. New York: Horizon Press, 1954. Signed and dated on the frontis page, “Frank Lloyd Wright”; the date is unclear, possibly “53”, before the book was available to the public in March 1954. Bound in tan cloth boards, volume contains 223 pages with over 100 black and white photos and architectural illustrations. Small spot on lower edge of cover, 1.5″ address sticker on pastedown, and shadowing from signature on title page, otherwise near fine condition. Sold for $1,254.

Frank Lloyd Wright signed first edition of “American Architecture”, published by Horizon Press: New York: 1955. The book catalogs and describes the iconic architect’s most famous works, filled with photos and architectural renderings. Wright’s dedication within the orange square on the front free endpaper reads; “To Dr. Jacob Feld / With Esteem / from Frank Lloyd Wright / 55”. Book runs 269pp., bound in burnt orange cloth boards with “Frank Lloyd Wright” etched inside a red square on the cover, done in the iconic Wright font. Slight bumping to corners and minor cocking to spine. Very good condition. Sold for $1,167.
Frank Lloyd Wright Signed Autobiography Book 1955
Wright was the pioneer of what came to be called the Prairie School movement of architecture and also developed the concept of the Usonian home in Broadacre City, his vision for urban planning in the United States. He also designed original and innovative offices, churches, schools, skyscrapers, hotels, museums, and other commercial projects. Wright-designed interior elements (including leaded glass windows, floors, furniture and even tableware) were integrated into these structures. He wrote several books and numerous articles and was a popular lecturer in the United States and in Europe. Wright was recognized in 1991 by the American Institute of Architects as “the greatest American architect of all time”. In 2019, a selection of his work became a listed World Heritage Site as The 20th-Century Architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright.

The book tells the story of the famous architect’s life, and features beautiful maroon and silver pages separating the five sections of the book. Wright signs “Frank Lloyd Wright” to the red square on the title page. Book runs 561pp., bound in burnt orange cloth boards with “Frank Lloyd Wright / An Autobiography” etched in silver. Measures 8.75″ x 8.75″. In very good condition with slight bumping to corners. Sold for $1,074.
Frank Lloyd Wright Signed 1st Edition of The Buildings
Frank Lloyd Wright signed first edition, fourth printing of “In the Nature of Materials: The Buildings of Frank Lloyd Wright 1887-1941” by Henry-Russell Hitchcock. Published by Duell, Sloan and Pearce: New York: 1942. Signed upon the title page by Wright, “Frank Lloyd Wright / Taliesin East / 53”. Beautifully bound in red cloth boards, with original dustjacket, volume contains 143 pages of writing and 413 chronological illustrations. Minor wear to boards and dustjacket, and four detached leaves of illustrations from 220-235. Interior is otherwise bright and clean, overall in very good plus condition. Sold for $970.
Ray Bradbury Personal Collection of Four End Tables From His Home
Ray Bradbury personally owned collection of four end tables from his house. Two identical tables with a drawer measure 31” x 27.5” x 11” deep. A third smaller table with leaves measures 24.5” (or 36” with leaves open) x 26” x 14” deep. Last table is larger and matches the first pair in style. Measures 33.5” x 26.5” x 21” deep. Some minor scratching and wear, overall very good. With a COA from the Ray Bradbury estate. Sold for $688.
