Here is a Psalms fore-edge painting book we have sold in the past:
Fore-Edge Paintings Within a 2 Volume Set of ”A Commentary on the Book of Psalms” From 1816
Exquisite pair of fore-edge paintings contained within ”A Commentary on the Book of Psalms” by George Horne in two separate volumes, with volume I showing a painting of Leatherhead Church, and volume II showing Barking Church. London: F.C. and J. Rivington et al., 1816 tenth edition. Concealed fore-edge paintings are painted in gilt, hiding the paintings until the pages are fanned, as intended. The art of fore-edge painting, especially popular in the 19th century, has become a rarefied profession, with only one professional full-time artist currently practicing the craft. Two volume set bound in navy morocco with gilt embellishments each measures 5.625” x 8.625”. Minimal shelf wear, private library plates from 1871 and previous owner’s signature in each volume. Housed in cloth slipcase. Very good plus condition. Sold for $1,500.
