Very rare Bill Wilson Alcoholics Anonymous first edition, first printing of his immensely influential book “Alcoholics Anonymous,” Works Publishing Company: New York: 1939. The co-founder of the addiction treatment organization inscribes the front pastedown to his friends Dr. and Mrs. Forrist V. Haley, in full: “My Dear Friends / Dr & Myrle Haley / Whose devotion has / meant so much to / so many – / As Ever / Bill Wilson / 11/21/43″. All first printing points are present: Half-title page is followed by the title page and pages v-viii, with another half-title page before the text begins; complete text is followed by three blank leaves. 400pp. tome measures 6″ x 9.25”. Bound in deep red cloth boards with gilt lettering, housed in a matching slipcase. Ink notation by Haley appears on front free endpaper, requesting that the book be returned to him. A slip typed with the Serenity Prayer is affixed to the front pastedown above Wilson’s autograph. Another slip with typed Biblical verse is affixed to the top margin of p.71. Surface abrasion to “& Myrle” of inscription. Professional strengthening to boards, overall in very good condition. An important work of the 20th century signed by the author regarded as a hero to millions. A spectacular Alcoholics Anonymous first edition. With PSA/DNA COA. Sold for $12,704.

Alcoholics Anonymous first edition, first printing hardcover book, signed and inscribed by AA co-founder Bill Wilson on the front free endpaper. Works Publishing Inc: New York: 1939. Wilson inscribes this copy in blue ink, “To Fred – This in grateful memory of your friendship and of the old days! Affectionately / Bill / NY / Feb/20/51 [or 57]”. In original publisher’s red cloth boards with titles in gilt lettering. Housed in a complementing red cloth clamshell case with black leather labels titled in gilt. Book has some wear to boards, with a circular dampstain on spine. Minor toning and and wear to edges of interior pages. Impressive Alcoholics Anonymous first edition. Very good condition overall. This is one of just approximately 1,900 surviving from the scant 4,860 printed in April of 1939. All first printing points are present: Half-title page is followed by the title page and pages v-viii, with another half-title page before the text begins; complete text is followed by three blank leaves. Seminal book by “Bill W.” kindled AA as an organization, outlining the famous 12 steps to sobriety and helping the nascent group reach membership in the millions globally. Runs 400pp. and measures 6.25″ x 9.25″. Bound in crimson cloth boards with gilt lettering. Exterior shows rubbing to gilt lettering, light soiling to boards and rippling to bottom of front board. Interior shows separation to fly-leaf, toning and pencil notations to leaves, prior owner’s name to front pastedown and clipped front free endpaper beside “Property of” notation, a common practice done to honor anonymity of deceased owners of the book. In very good condition overall. With a reproduction dustjacket and a fine red cloth clam-shell slipcase with gilt lettering. One of the most important non-fiction works of the 20th century. Bill Wilson signed book, “Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions.” Second printing. Alcoholics Anonymous Publishing Inc.: 1953. Hardcover with dustjacket, measures 5.75″ x 8.25″ and runs 187 pages. Signed and inscribed on the front free endpaper with his seldom-encountered full signature, “To Roger With all my gratitude for your friendship! Ever, Bill Wilson, NY 5/29/57.” Personal library card affixed to inside front cover, some mild toning to signed page and pastedowns, some light toning to covers, and a gift presentation written at bottom of signed page, otherwise fine condition. Dustjacket is lightly toned, with edge chips, creases, small tears, and some scattered paper loss particularly to spine. This is a second printing (circa 1956) of Alcoholics Anonymous co-founder Wilson’s follow-up to the historic “Alcoholics Anonymous” (1939). The book contains a detailed discussion of the program’s famous twelve steps, as well as the “twelve traditions” that were codified during the group’s formative years. Wilson has graced its pages with his uncommon full signature, rather than the more common “Bill” signed for fellow AA members. Accompanied by a letter of provenance, stating that the book was signed for a minister who kept the book in his church library, later presenting it to an AA member belonging to his church.
