Lee Alexander McQueen, CBE (17 March 1969 – 11 February 2010) was an English fashion designer and couturier. He founded his own Alexander McQueen label in 1992, and was chief designer at Givenchy from 1996 to 2001. His achievements in fashion earned him four British Designer of the Year awards (1996, 1997, 2001 and 2003), as well as the CFDA’s International Designer of the Year award in 2003.

Gown Worn By Queen Elizabeth II as Princess

Luxurious ball gown worn by Queen Elizabeth II as Princess. Elegant gown is accompanied by an invitation to her coronation as Queen of England. Gown of pink silk with floral pattern was designed by Norman Hartnell, the influential fashion designer and official Royal Family clothier. As provenance, lot includes documents from Buckingham Palace to a Ms. Kathleen Ward, to whom the gown was gifted in 1949 while Ms. Ward was a telephone operator at the palace. Also includes ”Woman’s Own” magazine in which Ms. Ward and the dress were featured, published 17 June 1961. Floor-length gown measures 17” across the chest and a slim 12” across the waist. Beautiful and near fine.  Sold for $17,500.

Complete Costume Worn by Judy Garland Onscreen in ”Presenting Lily Mars” — The Film Marking Her Hollywood Debut as a Glamorous Siren After Child Stardom & Girl-Next-Door Typecasting

Elaborate Judy Garland screen-worn costume from ”Presenting Lily Mars”. After a successful career as a child star and girl-next-door type, Garland had her coming-out as a Hollywood bombshell with this film, shot when she was 21. She starred here as the title character, a small-town girl who makes it to Broadway. Costume includes lace-trimmed white gown, floral-detailed corset, felt handbag, and lace bonnet. Heavy gown features an off-white upper with iridescent black skirt. Some strain and separation to seams and separation of iridescent threads near the hemline, else near fine. Corset is a reproduction, featuring black, purple, pale blue, yellow, rose, and green felt design with white sequins on an off-white background. Near fine. Cream felt handbag with floral felt cutout design is lined in purple felt. Near fine. Off-white bonnet ties with a satin ribbon and features felt floral adornments. Toning and some stray threads, with a detached floral piece, else near fine. A beautifully crafted costume from the evolution of a Hollywood legend. With a COA from the Gene London Costume Collection. Sold for $9,799.

Elizabeth Taylor Screen-Worn Gown From the Film Adaptation of the Hit Stephen Sondheim Musical, ”A Little Night Music”

Elizabeth Taylor screen-worn gown from the 1977 film, ”A Little Night Music,” based on the successful 1973 Sondheim musical. Directed by Harold Prince, the film starred Taylor, Len Cariou, Lesley-Anne Down and Diana Rigg. Taylor played Desiree Armfeldt, a famous actress who tries to seduce a newly married former fling in Austria circa 1900. Custom-made for Elizabeth Taylor by renowned designer Florence Kotz for costumer Barbara Matera, gown has original ”Barbara Matera LTD, New York” tag sewn to inseam with ”Ms. Taylor” printed on it in typescript. Gown is lilac with a teal chiffon overlay and art nouveau-style floral patterns embroidered at bottom. Costume also includes a boned bodice and ruffled sleeves with attached satin belt. Measures 15” shoulder to shoulder and 57” inches in length, with a train. Dress is delicate where bodice is attached to skirt, else near fine condition overall. From the estate of Elizabeth Taylor and with Christie’s provenance. Sold for $6,083.

Hollywood Legend Bette Davis Worn Polka-Dot Dress

Golden era of Hollywood legend Bette Davis worn dress. Black dress with cantaloupe polka dots zips up the back. Fine. With provenance from fashion designer Gene London, who obtained the dress from the William Doyle Gallery in New York, which auctioned Bette Davis’ estate in 1990. Sold for $1,220.

St. John Knit Dress Worn by Bette Davis

Bette Davis worn dress. Black long-sleeved dress with white linen collar and cuffs is a St. John knit in size 4. Minor staining to right cuff and spot to the skirt likely removable with dry cleaning, else fine. With provenance from fashion designer Gene London, who obtained the dress from the William Doyle Gallery in New York, which auctioned Bette Davis’ estate in 1990. Sold for $1,220.

Elizabeth Taylor Silk Dress From ”The Girl Who Had Everything”

Elizabeth Taylor wardrobe from the 1953 MGM film, ”The Girl Who Had Everything”. Elegant navy blue silk sleeveless dress was procured by costume designer Helen Rose for Elizabeth Taylor, who starred opposite Fernando Lamas as an attorney’s daughter who falls for one of her father’s roguish clients. Dress features a nipped-in waist and hemline that hits below the knee. A label sewn inside reads ”Elizabeth Taylor”. Measures 11.5” across the waist. Some lightening to fabric at center, else near fine. Originally acquired from the famous MGM Archives Sale, held in 1970 to free up space on the studio lot that had been occupied by the thousands of costumes and props used in MGM pictures over the years. Sold for $1,172.
