Walter Camp signed copy of “The Substitute: A Football Story.” New York: D. Appleton and Co.: 1908. Ink inscription on front free endpaper reads “To Miss McCarthy / With compliments of the author / Walter Camp / October Nineteen Eight”. Outstanding text by the Yale football coach who popularized the game of football and shaped its rules by cutting the number of players from 15 to 11, designing the gridiron field pattern and instituting the quarterback position. In very good condition with split to rear joint and light overall wear. Sold for $1,169.
