Leonidas Polk Civil-War Dated Autograph Letter Signed
Leonidas Polk (April 10, 1806 – June 14, 1864) was a bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Louisiana and founder of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the Confederate States of America, which separated from the Episcopal Church of the United States of America. He was a slaveholding planter in Maury County, Tennessee, and a second cousin of President James K. Polk. He resigned his ecclesiastical position to become a major general in the Confederate army, when he was called “Sewanee’s Fighting Bishop”. His official portrait at the University of the South depicts him dressed as a bishop with his army uniform hanging nearby.
Leonidas Polk autograph letter signed, datelined “Hdqr. Polks Corps, Shelby Tenn” on 2 April 1863. Letter is addressed to to General John C. Breckinridge who served as Vice President under President Buchanan before becoming a Confederate General in the Civil War. Letter discusses a report from General Braxton Bragg and reads in part, “…I send you a paper received today through the Adjunct Genl Officer of the Army at Tullahoma. It is not the paper I asked Capt. Robertson to send me and I thought myself very explicit in asking him for the Report you wished – his report to General Bragg. I have promptly asked him for a copy of that report. It shall be sent you so soon as received.” Signed “L. Polk”. Letter on one page measures 8″ x 12″. Minor toning and folds throughout, pencil notations to top left, and and endorsement to verso. Near fine overall. Sold for $1,954.
