Enrico Caruso Signed Hand-Drawn Sketch of Pol Plancon
Opera singer Enrico Caruso hand-drawn caricature portrait signed. Portrait in pencil is a representation of Caruso’s contemporary Pol Plancon, the famed operatic bass from France. Caruso signs the lower right corner, “Enrico Caruso” in pencil. Beneath, he writes “B Aires” and the year 191 (last digit hidden by mat). Pol Plancon was renowned for his vocal quality and precision and, with Caruso, was among the earliest vocal artists to pioneer recorded music. Caruso was the first to sell a million records at the dawn of the medium. His distinctive drawing style is evident in this sketch, rendered on a sheet of Teatro Colon, Buenos Aires stationery. Viewable area measures 7.75″ x 10.5″. Matted in white to an overall size of 10.5″ x 14.5″. Toning and creasing to paper and a numerical pencil notation to the lower right corner of mat, else near fine. Sold for $1,303.

Enrico Caruso (25 February 1873 – 2 August 1921) was an Italian operatic tenor. He sang to great acclaim at the major opera houses of Europe and the Americas, appearing in a wide variety of roles (74) from the Italian and French repertoires that ranged from the lyric to the dramatic. One of the first major singing talents to be commercially recorded, Caruso made 247 commercially released recordings from 1902 to 1920, which made him an international popular entertainment star.
