Madeline and the Gypsies is a children’s picture book by Ludwig Bemelmans featuring Bemelman’s popular character Madeline. It was first published in 1959 by Viking Press under the Viking Juvenile imprint. Ludwig Bemelmans (April 27, 1898 – October 1, 1962) was an Austrian-born American writer and illustrator of children’s books and adult novels. He is known best for the Madeline picture books. Six were published, the first in 1939.

Ludwig Bemelmans “Madeline and the Gypsies” signed by Bemelmans, who adds a delightful hand drawn sketch of his famous character. First edition, first printing published in New York: Viking: 1959. The author sketches Madeline in a gypsy hat and inscribes, “A Marc Antoine with love from his parent Ludwig”. Bemelmans was Marc Antoine’s godfather. 9″ x 12″ book is bound in green cloth boards with colorful illustrated pastedowns and endpapers. Bumping to board corners, else near fine. Chipping and minor paper loss to unclipped original dust jacket; very good. Sold for $1,068.
