Dark Town Battery Cast Iron 19th Century Mechanical Ban
J. & E. Stevens was a business in Cromwell, Connecticut formed by John and Elisha Stevens in 1843 to make cast-iron hardware, hammers, and iron toys. The success of their toy products, including cap guns, led to a refocus on toys. The company made a wide variety of toys for boys and girls during its more than 100 year history.
“Dark Town Battery” mechanical bank, circa 1888 when it was patented. Clever bank works by placing a coin in the pitcher’s hand and then simultaneously moving his head and the batter’s head so that the coin is “pitched”, the batter misses it, and then it’s deposited into the bank by the catcher. Designed by James H. Bowen and manufactured by J. & E. Stevens & Co., Cromwell, CT. “Darktown Battery” appears on the base. Measures 9.75″ long, 7″ tall and 2.75″ wide. Some paint loss, overall in very good, working condition. Sold for $2,447.
