The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance John Wayne Coffee Mug
Marion Michael Morrison (May 26, 1907 – June 11, 1979), known professionally as John Wayne and nicknamed Duke, was an American actor and filmmaker who became a popular icon through his starring roles in films made during Hollywood’s Golden Age, especially in Western and war movies. His career flourished from the silent era of the 1920s through the American New Wave, as he appeared in a total of 179 film and television productions. He was among the top box office draws for three decades, and he appeared with many other important Hollywood stars of his era. In 1999, the American Film Institute selected Wayne as one of the greatest male stars of classic American cinema.
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (/ˈvæləns/) is a 1962 American dramatic Western film directed by John Ford and starring John Wayne and James Stewart. The screenplay by James Warner Bellah and Willis Goldbeck was adapted from a 1953 short story written by Dorothy M. Johnson. In 2007, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”
Coffee mug given by John Wayne to a crew member on “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance”. Starting in the early 1950s, Wayne famously started giving custom-made coffee mugs to the cast and crew of his movies. Although their design differed with each movie, they all had the signature gold handle. This mug reads “Bill From Duke” on one side and “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance” on the other. With the “Wallace China U.S.A.” stamp on the underside, the china company used for Wayne’s mugs, as well as a stamp from Bob Williams of Tustin, CA, who owned The Mug Shop, the retail store that sold the mugs to Wayne. Substantial mug weighs 1 lb., 5 oz. Measures 4″ tall and 3.5″ wide, not including handle. Light wear, otherwise near fine. Sold for $1,716.
