Clarence Darrow Autograph Letter Signed re Prohibition
Clarence Darrow autograph letter signed, composed upon his personal stationery, dated 19 December, circa 1930, approximately three years before the 18th amendment prohibiting the sale and consumption of alcohol was repealed. Addressed to Dr. Forrest R. Black, a law professor whom Darrow was helping publish his essays advocating for repeal of Prohibition. Letter reads, “My Dear Mr. Black / Enclosed is the letter of reference [not included], which I presume you will mail. I could have made it much simpler perhaps I should. As soon as you arrive in Chicago would you please call up my home Hyde Park 5657. I have a meeting of my own in for the evening of the 29th for which I am sorry and the next morning I shall go east. So I want to see you as soon as is convenient on your arrival – Very truly / Clarence Darrow”. Single page letter measures 7.25″ x 10.25″. Uniform toning and mild creasing; very good condition. Sold for $1,000.
Clarence Darrow Autograph Letter Signed Re Prohibition
Clarence Darrow autograph letter signed regarding Prohibition. Upon his personal stationery, Darrow writes on 18 May (no year) to Dr. Forrest R. Black, a law professor and colleague of Darrow’s: “My Dear Mr. Black / I have just returned from about four months from Chicago. Have been in the south & New York. I find the MSS [manuscripts] of the way to get rid of Volsteadism. It is exceedingly well done and I am sure it can not be answered. Have you any plans about publishing it? I am anxious to see it put out and discussed. Sooner or later they must come to it. Also have received to St. Johns Law Review and will read your advice. Will be glad to hear from you.” Darrow signs the letter “Very truly / Clarence Darrow”. One page letter measures 7.25″ x 10.25″. Toning and light creasing, otherwise near fine. Sold for $1,000.
