Patrice Lumumba Autograph Letter Signed
Patrice Émery Lumumba (/lʊˈmʊmbə/; alternatively styled Patrice Hemery Lumumba; 2 July 1925 – 17 January 1961) was a Congolese politician and independence leader who served as the first Prime Minister of the independent Democratic Republic of the Congo (then Republic of the Congo) from June until September 1960. He played a significant role in the transformation of the Congo from a colony of Belgium into an independent republic. Ideologically an African nationalist and pan-Africanist, he led the Congolese National Movement (MNC) party from 1958 until his assassination.
Patrice Lumumba autograph letter signed from August 1959 as President of the MNC (Mouvement National Congolais), shortly before he was elected Prime Minster of the Republic of the Congo in 1960; lot also includes 13 press photographs, circa 1960 during Lumumba’s tenure as Prime Minster and after he was deposed. Lumumba served as Prime Minister for less than 3 months before being executed in January 1961 in a coup that brought dictator Joseph Mobutu to power. Composed in French on blue typing paper, single page letter measures 8.25″ x 10.5″. Folds and light creasing, overall very good plus condition. Rare. Sold for $3,414.
