Louis Daguerre Autograph Letter Signed (Daguerreotype)
Louis-Jacques-Mandé Daguerre (/dəˈɡɛər/; French: [dagɛʁ]; pronunciation; 18 November 1787 – 10 July 1851), better known as Louis Daguerre, was a French artist and photographer, recognized for his invention of the daguerreotype process of photography. He became known as one of the fathers of photography. Though he is most famous for his contributions to photography, he was also an accomplished painter and a developer of the diorama theatre.
Louis Daguerre autograph letter signed, dated 6 November 1826 shortly before his years-long process of inventing the daguerreotype, which he finalized in 1839. Daguerre writes in French to the theatre director and playwright Rene-Charles Guilbert de Pixerecourt, who at the time was director of the Theatre royal l’Opera-Comique. In addition to inventing the daguerreotype, Daguerre also invented the theater diorama, and here writes upon stationery from the Maison du Diorama. Boldly signed “Daguerre” at the conclusion. Letter measures 5″ x 7.75″ with integral address leaf, framed with an engraving of Daguerre to a size of 15.75″ x 13.25″. Shallow folds, overall in near fine condition. With a COA from the Kenneth Rendell gallery. Sold for $3,016.
