Here are some Mary Shelley signed letters we have sold in the past:

Mary Shelley Autograph Letter Signed During Her Travels Through Italy in 1843 — Shelley Gives Thanks for Sending Letters Written by Her Late Husband, Percy Shelley

Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley autograph letter signed, dated 10 July (1843) from Sorrento, Italy. In this rare missive by the “Frankenstein” author, Shelley writes to the Italian nobleman Bartolomeo Cini regarding letters written by her late husband Percy Shelley to Cini’s mother-in-law, the writer Margaret King, which Shelley hoped to acquire.

Letter in Italian reads in part, “…I have received all of the letters about which you wrote to me, and this evening another one arrived to me by way of Signor Lotterelli, and I thank you greatly. We will depart one day this week. So please don’t send me any more. When we get to Livorno, I shall repay my debt. Leave a letter for me at your bank in order to let me know how much I owe you. I hope (and how much!) to see dear Nerina in Livorno. That may depend upon the day of our departure, which will be either Thursday or Saturday the 13th or 15th of this month. I pray to God that we have good weather. I very much dislike traveling by sea in bad weather…Mary Shelley”.

Shelley’s travels through Europe with her son Percy and his friends formed the basis of her travelogue, “Rambles in Germany and Italy in 1840, 1842 and 1843”. Two page letter on bifolium stationery measures 5.5″ x 7.75″ as folded, with address panel on verso. Remnant of red wax seal at top right corner. Very good plus condition. With full translation. Sold for $4,950.

Mary Shelley Autograph Letter Signed Regarding Letters Written by Her Late Husband, Percy Shelley — ”…I would truly love to see these letters of my husband again, if they indeed exist…”

Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley autograph letter signed, dated Monday 14 March (1842) during her travels through Italy. In this rare missive by the ”Frankenstein” author, Shelley writes to the Italian nobleman Bartolomeo Cini regarding letters written by her late husband Percy Shelley to Cini’s mother-in-law, the writer Margaret King Tighe, which Shelley hoped to acquire. Margaret King Tighe was a pupil of Shelley’s mother, and the couple reacquainted themselves with her during their travels in Italy some 28 years prior.

Letter in Italian reads in part, ”…There is one thing I have had in my mind to tell you for a long time, but since there hasn’t been any opportunity, I will write it now. / As you certainly know, my husband was a very close friend of the mother [strikethrough] of Nerina [Cini’s wife] – and he surely wrote to her several times. Therefore, I would like to know if you believe that the papers and letters of this esteemed lady still exist, because I would truly love to see these letters of my husband again, if they indeed exist. I was told that after her tormented death the papers and letters that belonged to her burned – you will know without any doubt. I would rather not mention this to Laura or Nerina, knowing that [strikethrough] this is still a sad subject for them, who deeply loved and are mourning their beloved mother. / Apologies for this inconvenience and accept now and forever my gratitude for all the kindness that you have extended to us. Please consider me your friend and servant. / Mary Shelley”.

Shelley’s travels through Europe with her son Percy formed the basis of her travelogue, ”Rambles in Germany and Italy in 1840, 1842 and 1843”. Three page letter on bifolium stationery measures 5.25” x 8.25” as folded, with address panel and red wax seal on verso. Chip to top left corner, and writing in pencil on last page. Very good plus condition. With full translation. Sold for $3,025.

Mary Shelley Autograph Letter Signed Regarding Letters Written by Percy Shelley — “…This place is truly a paradise, its beauty is indescribable. We live in a peace and tranquillity…”

Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley autograph letter signed, dated Monday 15 June (likely 1843) from Sorrento during her travels through Italy. In this rare missive by the “Frankenstein” author, Shelley writes to the Italian nobleman Bartolomeo Cini regarding letters written by her late husband Percy Shelley to Cini’s mother-in-law, the writer Margaret King Tighe, which Shelley was waiting to receive. Margaret King Tighe was a pupil of Shelley’s mother, and the couple reacquainted themselves with her during their travels in Italy some 28 years prior.

Letter in Italian reads in part, “…Dear Mr. Cini, / I have not received any letters other than the one that Nerina sent since I arrived here [strikethrough], at this address. It is likely that you have not received any for us, but I am mentioning this because the Post Office of Naples has a terrible reputation in terms of preciseness – and the one in Sorrento is much worse. From now, would you be so kind as to send the letters that will maybe be sent to you to [illegible] M.M. Cotterelli [illegible] Naples. / and I am more certain of receiving them because our stay here is rather uncertain. We will probably leave here for England at the beginning of the current month. We will travel by sea. It would be very good if we found Nerina in Livorno.

This place is truly a paradise, its beauty is indescribable. We live in a peace and tranquillity very pleasant to me, but Percy and Knox find it a bit monotonous. I hear from London that Nerina feels quite better. I pray God that she will regain her health. Percy and Knox send their best regards and many thanks for your kindness. / Please consider me your servant and friend. / M Shelley”. Shelley’s travels through Europe with her son Percy formed the basis of her travelogue, “Rambles in Germany and Italy in 1840, 1842 and 1843”. Three page letter on bifolium stationery measures 5.5″ x 8.5″ as folded, with address panel and red wax seal on verso. Chip to corner of last page, and some ink bleedthrough. Very good plus condition. With full translation. Sold for $2,520.
