Sir Elton Hercules John CH CBE (born Reginald Kenneth Dwight; 25 March 1947) is an English singer, songwriter, pianist, and composer. Sir Timothy Miles Bindon Rice (born 10 November 1944) is an English lyricist and author. He is best known for his collaborations with Andrew Lloyd Webber, with whom he wrote, among other shows, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar, and Evita; with Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson of ABBA, with whom he wrote Chess; and with Disney on Aladdin, The Lion King, the stage adaptation of Beauty and the Beast, and the original Broadway musical Aida. He also wrote lyrics for the Alan Menken musical King David, and for DreamWorks Animation’s The Road to El Dorado.

Elton John custom-made costume designed by Kansai Yamamoto, who became an iconic designer for rock & roll legends like Elton John in the 1970s. Outfit was made during the 1980s and features an ornate and industrial-style coat made of black wool and flannel, with straps and wet-look cotton panels dispersed. Also includes a jerkin, blouson and trousers. With original ”Kansai International” tags intact. Provenance: Lot 1429, Elton John Costume Auction Vol. IV Diverse Collections, Sotheby’s, London, 8-9 September 1988. Sold for $8,567.

Incredible 55th Grammy Awards collection of signatures from 70+ leading musicians who have shaped the contemporary music scene. Each musician signed his or her name while backstage, either during rehearsals or the show itself, which was held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on 13 February 2013. Most signatures are quite large, some measuring 9” in diameter. Impresario Mark Cuban signs as well, with further signatures totaling more than 70 in all. ”Epica” brand handmade Italian book is bound in marbled brown leather and measures a grand 13” x 12”. Album includes 51 sheets with signatures on front and verso of each. Measures 11.75” x 11.75” on thick cream-colored cardstock. Front board has one minor indentation. Near fine overall. With an LOA from the Grammy Foundation. From our Elton John Costume Auction. Sold for $9,799.

Elton John Autograph Letter Signed — Regarding “Song For Guy” — “…He was a smashing little bloke and I’m glad the song turned out so well…”
Elton John autograph letter signed, dated 21 November 1978 on “Watford Football Club” stationery. Letter discusses his new song, “Song for Guy” and reads in part: “Dear Paul, Thanks for the letter about ‘Song for Guy.’ He [Guy Burchett] was a smashing little bloke and I’m glad the song turned out so well. It’s being issued as a single in 10 days time – by public demand!…If it’s a hit it’ll be great to see Guy take his place in a little bit of chart history…All the best Elton”. With some minor toning and foxing in spots. Very good. Sold for $1,072.

Academy First Award to Lennie Hayton for his score of the hit musical ”On the Town,” produced by MGM in 1949. The film starred Frank Sinatra and Gene Kelly as sailors, and Ann Miller and Betty Garrett as their love interests. The number 517 and the copyright symbol are engraved into the film reel surface behind Oscar’s heels; the 1949 awards were the first year that the statues were numbered, starting with 501. The plaque across the front reads ”Academy First Award / To / Lennie Hayton / For The Scoring of the Musical Picture / ‘On The Town”’. The plaque on the reverse reads: ”Academy of / Motion Picture / Arts And Sciences / 1949”. The Dodge Manufacturing plaque near the bottom edge reads ”Manufactured under world rights granted / by Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences / To Dodge Inc. Trophies – Los Angeles California”. An LOA from Lena Horne’s daughter is also included in the lot (Lena Horne was married to Lennie Hayton). Gold-plated brittanium statue posing on a film reel stands 10.25” tall, 13.25” with base, made of spun brass measuring 5.25” in diameter. Statue weighs 6 lbs. 1.75 oz. The felt backing is present but has separated completely, and there are some very minimal flecks to the finish, else near fine. The gold lacquer finish remains brilliant. Sold for $128,540.

Number 214 of 250 limited edition copies printed in October 1935 and boldly signed in black ink to limitation page by George Gershwin, Dubose Heyward, Ira Gershwin and Rouben Mamoulian. Bound in full red leather with black leather labels and accompanied by original slipcase. 559pp. with full color frontis and title page illustrations. Minor overall wear and foxing. Chips to black leather labels on backstrip and some separation to slipcase. Signatures remain bold and clear. A scarce signed copy of this classic American folk opera in excellent condition. Sold for $5,372.
George Gershwin Signed Book Inscribed
Extremely rare George Gershwin inscribed biography. “George Gershwin” by Issac Goldberg. Inscribed in ink to front free endpaper: “For Robert Garland / A Baltimore boy who made good in the big city. / With Admiration, / George Gershwin / Sept, 29,1931…” Gershwin adds handwritten music to his inscription from his 2nd Rhapsody. Excellent condition. Sold for $3,546.
