Here is a Vicksburg diary we have sold in the past:
81st IL Infantry Siege of Vicksburg Diary
1863 diary by Alexander Roberts, a Corporal in the 81st Illinois Infantry, Co. D, who describes in detail the taking of Vicksburg — from the beginning of the regiment’s march at Milliken’s Bend, to the Battles of Port Gibson, Raymond, Jackson, Champion Hill, and Big Black River Bridge to the eventual siege, and then surrender on 4 July 1863. Roberts suffered a slight hand wound in the campaign, although it didn’t take him out of fighting, and watched as many of his fellow soldiers died in the 22 May 1863 assault on Vicksburg, one of General Grant’s pushes before settling in for the six weeks’ long siege. Vicksburg portion of diary begins on 15 April 1863, just before Roberts reports landing at Milliken’s Bend on 16 April. Portion of diary before the Battle of Port Gibson reads in part (uncorrected for small spelling errors), “April 16 – 8 o’clock was ordered to strick tents and to ready to march mediately and as our tent was taken down and loaded on the wagon we went on bord of the steamer comercial and landed at Milikens Bend at 10 o’clock PM…Monday [April] 20 – To day there was a detail of 3 hundred men from our reg to load the boats to run the blocade. Quite a number of the boys got drunk and a row took place at night…” Sold for $3,900.
